UBMHC took on Cardiff & Met HC at Coombe Dingle in the clubs first match back in the England Hockey League after relegation one season ago. Cardiff started quickly but it was Bristol who took any early lead thanks to an excellent backhand finish from debutant Rufus McNaught-Barrington. This helped Bristol settle into the game more, and good build up play provided last seasons top scorer Tom Minall with a backhand opportunity which he struck into the bottom corner. 2-0 Bristol at half time.
The second half saw Cardiff have a lot of the ball, however Bristol defended excellently and on the occasions Cardiff were able to break through Todd Dudley made the saves required in goal. After Bristol had missed a couple of big opportunities, it was left to Rufus McNaught-Barrington to score his second and Bristol’s third to secure the 3 points with a hard struck shot past Cardiff’s keeper. Cardiff did score a goal of there own with 5 minutes to play, and while it was frustrating not to keep a clean sheet it did not take the gloss off what was a very good start to life back in the national league. 3-1 Bristol final score.
Thank you to all that came out to support; it was fantastic to see a full sideline at Fortress Dingle!
