On Thursday, we were given some sad news from a fellow clubman. Xander van der Poll, an upcoming player within the club, suffered a tragic fall where he shattered his T12 vertebra. He was rushed straight to surgery but has been unable to move his legs since.
Xander was a fresher in the club this year and has become a massive part of the club. Having recently been elected to the role of social media sec, Xander has been one of the most prominent members of the club this year throwing himself into every aspect of the club. A true warrior on the pitch, he dubbed himself 'the club's best defensive player' and despite never having played prop, excelled in the position. It is cruel then, that his playing career has been put on hold for now but we know that his relentless determination and enthusiasm will allow him to recover from this and bounce back even stronger.
The response from the club has been amazing and we want Xander to know that we are always here for him no matter what. We are a rugby family and it is in times like these that we realise our club is something special. You are part of the UBH for life and there will always be a place for you here.
We send all our love and support to Xander, his girlfriend Maddie and his family at this difficult time. We wish him a speedy recovery and ask that everyone respect his privacy in the coming weeks.
