Rangers fail to reach third round once again!

Underbank's hopes of reaching the third round of the Challenge Cup for the first time in long history were blown away on a gusty day in Holmfirth as Featherstone Lions progressed to the draw when the semi-professional League 1 clubs enter the competition. The Lions deservedly edged a thrilling cup tie as the lead changed several times and not until the visitors' Danny Glassell grabbed his second try of the match on 75 minutes was the tie appear settled. The Lions started the game strongly and opened the scoring on 2 minutes through a try by Gaz Williamson converted by Ian Jackson. Underbank replied on 6 minutes as they moved the ball to the left edge and Will Broadbent -Allen fire a pass to wing Courtney Allette who bulldozed his way over to score in the left corner. Richard Pogson couldn't convert. The Lions increased their lead on 14 minutes as Dean Gamble touched down a stab kick through and Jackson added the extras, but once again Underbank replied as Tom Stringer powered over from short range and Pogson converted. With Rangers in the ascendancy and pressing the visitors goal line once more Danny Glassell intercepted a Danny Hirst pass to race 70 metres to touch down on 34 minutes. With Jackson's conversion the Lions led by 18-10. Crucially for the game as a whole Underbank's Richard Knight then left the field with a dislocated thumb injury. However, Underbank had the final say of the first half as Allette completed his brace climbing above two defenders to take a Pogson high kick to score to leave the the half time score 18 -14 in the visitors favour. Underbank came out of the blocks quickly in the second half with scores by Lee St Hilaire and Jamie Stringer (his first for the club at this level), plus a Pogson conversion to lead 24-18. However, in Knight's absence they didn't have the guile and experience to take control of the game for the final half and hour. The concession of field position through a combination of handling errors and unnecessary penalties allowed Featherstone to march upfield and half back Jake Perkins crossed for Jackson to add the extras on 57 minutes to level the scores at 24 apiece. Jackson then added a penalty on 62 minutes. Pogson replied in similar fashion five minutes later to once again level the scores, and he had a chance to give Rangers the lead as the resultant kick off went out on the full, but he pulled wide his 50 metre penalty kick attempt. Both teams were slugging it out like boxing heavyweights trying to force a gap in the opposition's defence, and Danny Glassell did so with a powerful burst to seal the win for the visitors with his second score on 75 minutes to leave the final score as 26-30 to Featherstone Lions.

Underbank team was: Jakob Garside, Lee St Hilaire, Alex Chatterton (C), Jamie Stringer, Courtney Allette, Richard Knight, Richard Pogson, Tom Booth, Danny Hirst, Nathan Robinson, Will Broadbent-Allen, and Craig Williams;
Interchange: Oliver Moorhouse, Tom Stringer, Andy Boothroyd, and Matthew Poulter.
