29-19 is the final for the Pioneers first Champions Cup win

Both the forwards and backs provided the level of play needed to beat a quality team like Regis

When DU and Regis met in the early hours Sunday morning it was clear from the start that this would be a hard-nosed, rough game common place when the two intra city rivals clash. Players were hitting harder than normal and tensions were high as both teams were aware of the playoff implications at stake. Despite having a beaten-up forwards pack and a scrumhalf who was fresh off an injury the Pioneers proved they came to Regis to win with a crucial 29-19 victory. The win came in the first Champions Cup game for DU (the Champions Cup is between DU, Regis, and New Mexico Highlands) and moves them one step closer to a return to the Cowboy Cup for the NSCRO playoffs.
The highlight of the game for DU was the play by the forward pack. They were outsized and five of the eight starters were freshman. Despite that they put up a stellar fight against a Regis side that favored the pick and go and made lots of use of their fowards. Most importantly they held them up multiple times within the five-meter line in an excellent display of try line defense. On offense the Pioneer pack demonstrated the aptitude of their technical game by running plays that exploited DU’s better fitness as they managed to run down and tire the Regis pack.
DU’s leading scorer, flyhalf Vaughn Williams, led DU with two tries, a conversion kick and a penalty kick all within the first quarter. In the second half the Pioneers scored a long try with a break away run by winger Garrett Willmon scored from close to DU’s own 22 meter. The final proverbial nail in the coffin for Regis came off a back play where fullback Peter Rowe popped the ball to inside center Ian Quinn who punched in DU’s bonus point to complete an already fantastic game of rugby for the Pioneer side.
With their fifth try, DU scored a bonus point in the Champions Cup standings. A win against Regis nets them four points and the bonus total it to five. The Pios missed the NSCRO playoffs by a bonus point last year and the team understands that scoring the bonus point could mean the difference with teams as competitive as the Champions Cup.
Man of the match Sunday was freshman eight man Jack Kruger who proved himself a force to be reckoned with on defense, and he was not afraid to put his body on the line. He made excellent tackles on kickoffs and managed to stop good Regis players in their tracks on defense. DU needs to continue to practice and train the way the did for Regis if they are going to beat NSCRO sevens national champions New Mexico Highlands University this weekend. Kickoff is set for five pm Saturday at Dianne Wendt Sports Fields where DU will be looking for its third straight league win.
