Pioneers move to 3-1 on the season

After a tough loss to New Mexico Highlands last week DU Rugby came into Saturday’s homecoming game against School of Mines with a must win attitude. Not only would this game count towards their league record, but the team had a crowd to impress. Parents, family, and alumni packed Dianne Wendt Sports Fields eager for a DU win.
The Pioneers began the game with two drives into Mines territory, and both ended on penalty kicks by flyhalf Vaughn Williams, making the score 6-0. In the tenth minute Mines responded with a penalty kick of their own to bring the score within three points. A few minutes later scrumhalf Chace Jacques scored a try off a tap and go penalty. With the conversion the score moved to 13-3 in favor of DU. Mines pulled within three again with a 24th minute try and conversion. DU gave themselves some breathing room with a penalty kick in the 26th minute, and they scored off the tap and go once more with a try by flanker Anthony Mazy right before half, bringing the halftime score to 23-10.
DU got the ball back in the second half but could not maintain control, turning the ball over. After possession changed hands a few times Mines managed to score a try despite the stellar DU goal line defense. The conversion kick brought the Orediggers (Yes that is their mascot) within a try. Ten minutes later, DU scored again off the hands of Chace Jacques who snuck a try in off a five-meter scrum, dodging Mines defenders left and right. The try put the score at 28-17 in favor of the Pioneers who would notch another penalty kick in the 80th minute.
The man of the match for DU was sophomore flanker Anthony Mazy who score a try and recorded six steals on defense. DU’s forwards once again shined on defense, holding up Mines at the goal line multiple times throughout the bout. The Pioneers have held all but one team to under 20 points this season. Their next game is home this Sunday against Regis at 2:45. The team is going to be practicing hard and working out with intent this week as they prepare for the biggest game of the season.
