Five-day tournament brings excitement within the club

We are hoping to bring home a trophy, proving that what happens in Vegas doesn't necessarily stay there

Leaving for Las Vegas on Wednesday the 27th, the Pioneers are sending thirteen players and four coaches to compete in the NSCRO sevens national championship qualifier for the first time in club history.
Since early February the team has been training and refining their sevens game in preparation for this important tournament where a win means a shot at a sevens national championship. They depart from DIA at 1:00 pm Wednesday and begin pool play the next day, Thursday the 28th. Their first group stage game kicks off against Southern Utah University at 9:20 am pt. Aside from SUU Mira Costa College rounds out their group B. Group A, who DU would potentially face the winner of in the championship game, includes California Maritime Academy, Occidental College, and familiar NSCRO opponent New Mexico Tech. DU plays all their games on Thursday beginning with Southern Utah at 9:20 followed by Mira Costa at 10:40 to round out group play. Depending on how the team does in the round robin they would either play a quarter final match at 12:20 or advance to the semi final at 1:40. A potential championship game would take place at 3:40.
Post tournament the team will be involved with fun rugby-centered team activities centered around Vegas Sevens. Thursday night the guys meet with DUWRFC for some cross-team activities. On Friday some players will join up with Queen City Rugby to play in a few of their open sevens games while others will have the option to explore the fan fest, relax, and watch some of the international sevens games. Saturday DU Rugby will be in Sam Boyd Stadium to watch the sevens tournament taking place live, seeing elite sevens teams such as New Zealand, Fiji, and reigning champions USA. Saturday night is a quiet one in preparation for the early 4:00 am wake up Sunday to catch the flight back to DU.
Although it would be preferred otherwise not every team member is able to attend. Due to budgetary reasons only thirteen players and five coaches can make the trip. Going this year are starting forwards Jack Carmone, Daniel Hauser, Sam Noonan, and Vaughn Williams. The starting backs are Ben G. Jones, Louie Bogolub (captain), and Pete Rowe. On the bench is Ian Quinn, Brennen Jackson, Nathan Garrett, Chris Reilly, Anthony Mazy, and Chace Jacques. The coaches going are head coach Ken Stone, assistant coaches Tom Pearce and Brett Evans, medical trainer Amie Kern, and equipment manager Eric Deubler.
The Vegas trip is an opportunity not only for DU Men’s Rugby to bring home a trophy and make it to sevens nationals but a way to interact with the wider international rugby fan base at one of the largest and most prestigious sevens tournaments in the world. The players get a once in a lifetime opportunity to play and watch high level rugby as well as bond with each other over the sport they all share a love for.
