Uxbridge secure a last minute bonus point win in the opening fixture of the season!

On Saturday 9th of September Uxbridge RFC 1st XV kicked off their 70th Anniversary with a bonus point win over Old Isleworthians RFC 1st XV.
Uxbridge started off strong with a dominant opening exchange. In the opening 10 minutes Uxbridge saw the majority of ball which saw great rewards as Uxbridge's James Malvenan cross over in the corner, after a strong passage of play from the Uxbridge backs which created the overlap for the try. Up stepped Ieuan Jones for the kick but narrowly pushed the ball wide of the posts leaving score at 5-0 to the visitors.
After the restart Old Isleworthians started to come in to force as the Uxbridge set piece was not going to plan. This caused Isleworthians to force there way up just outside the 22, where Old Isleworthians fly half took the ball and ran through the Uxbridge back line to score under the posts. Old Isleworthians took the lead after the fly half swiftly converted the try leaving the hosts to take a 7-5 leave after the first 20 minutes.
However, the Isleworthians try seemed to spur Uxbridge on as they worked their way into the hosts 22 where James Malvenan again broke through before being tackled 5 meters out from the try line where Old Isleworthians flanker was penalised for not rolling away. Uxbridge tried to take the quick tap to dart over the line but the penalised flanker tripped the Uxbridge player causing him to receive a yellow card and spend 10 minutes in the bin.
With the extra man advantage Uxbridge were unable to break through the Isleworthians defence after mistakes were made at the line out. This then relieved the pressure off the hosts meaning they would go without conceding while the visitors had the extra man.
But almost straight after Isleworthians were restored to the full 15, outside centre Tom Rainey went over the Isleworthians try line. After yet again another outstanding team move from the Uxbridge set piece and the forwards to be finished by the Uxbridge back. This time Uxbridge's fly half Ieuan Jones converted the try meaning Uxbridge went into the half time interval leading the hosts 12-7.
It had almost seemed that the half time interval came at the wrong time for Uxbridge as pressure from Isleworthians saw them truck up into the Uxbridge half just as the heavens opened for a hail storm. Here Isleworthians won a penalty where the Isleworthian skipper chose to have a shot at goal. Up stepped the Isleworthian fly half who slotted the penalty from Uxbridge's 10 meter line. Leaving Old Isleworthians only 2 points behind Uxbridge at 10-12.
From the restart Uxbridge managed to retain the ball after a mistake from an Isleworthian player after dropping the ball in the treacherous weather. The weather had seemed to be a greater opponent than Old Isleworthians after causing many balls to be knocked on after the wet conditions. As the passing storm blew over Uxbridge seemed to regain the upper hand as second row Mark Coles went over in the corner after another well worked team move. However, Jones was unable to add the extra points leaving Old Isleworthians still within 1 score of the visitors with it standing 10-17.
As time went on Isleworthians seemed to be gain ground on Uxbridge and had a long spell inside the Uxbridge 22. Before the pressure resulted in hooker Sean McAndrew to be yellow carded for inter fearing with play after being offside. Leaving Uxbridge to be 1 man down for the final 10 minutes of the game. Even though Isleworthians had a 1 man advantage they were unable to convert the pressure with a try before Uxbridge cleared their lines. But the pressure was not fully relieved after Old Isleworthians quick winger sprinted down the 5 meter channel to score. With the opportunity to level the scores the Isleworthians fly half stepped up and converted the try and tying up the scores at 17-17.
It had seemed that demons of past were going to make an appearance again and see Uxbridge miss out on a win against the hosts. Though with one less man Uxbridge were still inside the hosts 22 and pulling on the pressure. It had seemed that the game was going to end in a draw and points were going to be shared. Until inside centre Marc Pinzon danced through the Isleworthians backs to score out wide and give Uxbridge the bonus point win to kick off the season. Ieuan Jones finished off the game with the conversion from out wide giving Uxbridge all 5 points and making the full time score 24-17 to the visitors. A brilliant start to the season for Uxbridge which sees them lie 3rd in the table. Next week sees a rest weekend for the 1st team but the 2nd team take on Chiswick 4th team. As well the club is having an open day. The event starts at 10:30 with a touch tournament taking place on the new pitch. Alongside throughout the day there will be bar by the pitch and other events.
