Uxbridge RFC V Old Isle Worthians

The rain was thrashing down as Uxbridge RFC lined up against Old Isleworthians at home on Saturday.

Uxbridge have been building in confidence over the past weeks as their results have been improving. Today they were hoping to take the next step and get back to winning ways.

The game, as expected was full of scrummages with lots of players dropping the wet and muddy ball. Both teams enjoyed 8 picks with Old I’s having the best of the first half often making 20/30 yards down the blind side. Neither team dominated the half, however Old Isleworthinas scored first with nice wide hands putting a winger over the line in the corner.

The second half stated with Uxbridge on the front foot as both teams looked to kick a lot as dropped balls were a plenty. Confident in taking the high ball and some fantastic return kicking from Matt Cowper gave Uxbridge the upper hand with the territory. This pressure was sustained throughout the half finally resulting in Uxbridge scoring from 3 forward phases off the back of an attacking scrum.

The whether deteriorating and temperature dropping the pressure remained high from Uxbridge. They never looked like conceding and where unlucky to miss a long distance penalty. With only 5 minutes left of the game it looked inevitable that Uxbridge would do what they needed to do to break the deadlock and win the game.

In an unusual turn of an events, and to the shock of both teams and the spectators, the referee blew the whistle for the end of the game 5 minutes early to end what was a close and exciting game throughout – the final score was 5-5.
