THE VICKERS COMPLETE DOUBLE OVER THE BAY

VCD ATHLETIC 2 HERNE BAY 0

The Vickers welcomed new signing Matt Funnell to the club who made an excellent debut in goal, together with Temi Eweka who has returned to the club from Hastings United. With Charlie MacDonald back after injury we looked a more balanced side and registered our fourth double of the season with a 2-0 win over the Bay, despite some anxious moments before we secured the win late in the game.
The visitors came close in the opening minutes when we conceded a foul on the edge of our area, but Harry Miller sent his free kick narrowly over the angle. The game became end to end with us looking dangerous on the break, but all too often both sides let themselves down with passes going astray in the final third. Jack Steventon’s ball found Junior Baker whose neat touch set up Charlie MacDonald, only for his shot to be blocked behind. Then Alastair Gordon suffered the same fate after being played in by Charlie. Jack’s long throw got flicked on by Ali Fuseini, but Junior’s header was well taken under the bar by keeper Simon Overland as we kept up the pressure. We were restricting Herne Bay to half chances as we continued to attack and had more chances when Joe Denny had a powerful header saved at the foot of a post by Overland and then, after Brad Simms broke down the right, his low cross was fired in by Charlie and after it was only half cleared Junior tested Overland with a clean strike. On the half hour we made our pressure tell when Aymun El-Moyhalbel won the ball on the half way line before breaking quickly and playing the ball inside to Charlie, who worked his way past two defenders and tucked the ball home low into the corner. We were enjoying lots of possession but were unable to add to our score as the Bay defended well, and often our final pass let us down. Charlie drove inches wide from Ali’s neat through ball, and Alastair picked up a loose ball before rounding Harry Miller, but Overland denied him with a fine save. Herne Bay had their best chance shortly before the break when a long diagonal ball saw Raphe Brown get past Brad Simms, and his shot to the far corner looked a certain goal until Matt Funnell stretched to turn the ball past the upright. The last chance of the half was ours when Dominic Odusanya broke down the right and released Alastair whose cross was flicked on by Charlie to Ali, but his firm header was touched over by the keeper.
Herne Bay opened the second half straight on the attack as they looked for an equaliser, and pressured us for a spell but without really threatening our goal. At the other end, after Brad’s shot had been blocked, Dominic drove the loose ball just over the bar. Then, Matt Funnell’s long kick was flicked on by Joe Denny to set Charlie on his way, and he broke into the box but shot wide with Junior in space at the far post. We continued to look positive in open play but our final cross or pass was letting us down as we tried to increase our lead and there was always the chance that the Bay could claim a surprise leveller. We got a warning when a loose pass was picked up by Danny Leonard who got through on goal but Matt made a good block with his legs, and did even better when going full length to turn Ronald Sobowales’ follow up behind. Herne Bay were growing in confidence and began to have their best spell of the game as they sensed a goal was in the offing. They won a succession of corners that were a danger but with Jack, Joe, Junior and Temi defending well we were able to give Matt good protection. Substitute Malachi Hudson fed Charlie who played the ball in to Ali 10 yards out, but as he shaped to shoot the ball was whipped off his toes by Lewis Risk. The visitors refused to give up and caused us some more anxious moments as the clock ticked down as they kept up their effort, but with just 3 minutes of the match remaining we finally made the game safe. A ball played into the middle was won by Charlie who robbed a defender and touched it forward to Ali who made ground, and spotting Overland off his line he sent a superb right foot shot over the keeper into the net. An exceptional piece of skill. The game was now done but it has to be said that we made hard work of a game that was largely ours, but it was 3 points gained and we must keep the effort going for the remaining games.
