Angels Soar Into 4th Gear Against Beleaguered VCD

The Vickers went out on the road to face a new look Tonbridge Angels at the Longmead Stadium for the opening day Ryman Premier League fixture.
VCD went into the game with optimism after a great pre season and would have hoped to have pushed on and got themselves a positive result against the relegated Angels.
The reality, however, was a lesson in how to finish and how not to defend.
VCD were feeling their way into the game and for the first 20 or so minutes had been shading the game in terms of possession etc.
On the few occasions that Tonbridge had got behind the defence they were to make the chance count and Tommy Whitnell would score the first of what would be a 14 minute hat trick and match ball to take home with him with a lovely header into the corner of the net. 1-0.
VCD should have equalised less then 2 minutes later. A simple side foot around the keeper and it would have been 1-1 and the game could have been so much different to how it ended.
‘Mr Prolific’ Tommy Whitnell however would take just another 10 minutes to find the net. A defensive mix up from trying to play it from the back would prove costly. I am sure Mr Whitnell couldn’t believe his luck and nipped in for 2-0 and effectively game over.
3 minutes later and it really would be game over. Whitnell would go on to complete his hat trick and send Tonbridge on their way to 3 points.
The only other thing of note in the half would be a melee and a little bit of handbags at dawn with Tonbridge’s Nathan Campbell lucky to keep his on field status. So half time came and the Angels went in 3-0 up.
Alex Teniola would be the only addition to the Tonbridge score. He was on the pitch for a mere 3 minutes and then headed in to the net in front of his mum and you could tell by his celebration it meant a lot to him.
Lewis Perkins however will go down as the man to score VCD’s first ever goal at the Ryman Premier League level to leave the Vickers fans with something to smile about.
So final score was 4-1.
