Things did not look good for the Vickers prior to the long journey to Dereham with Mitch Hahn, Nicky Symons, Jeff Imudia and Jamie Guy all out with injury, plus Robbie Rees also unavailable, but their replacements acquitted themselves well in a close game that either side could have won, although a draw was probably the fairest result. On a sticky pitch, Town elected to kick down the slight slope with the wind and had the better of the early play, with VCD looking dangerous on the counter as both sides looked for openings. When the Vickers gave the ball away cheaply in midfield, it was quickly spread wide to Rhys Logan but not for the only time in the game, after getting down the line, his poor cross sailed over the bar. Dereham had a slice of luck when a reckless two footed tackle by Dion Frary left Frantz Tchonang in a heap as he tried to clear, but the referee was in a generous mood awarding only a yellow card when red seemed more appropriate. VCD suffered another injury setback early in the game when Ed O’Neill picked up a hamstring strain, being replaced by Farai Hallam, who was himself returning after injury but the visitors continued to match their opponents in a tight encounter. A Vickers free kick was hacked clear leaving Dereham four against two on the break but rather than play their way through, a Dereham forward chose to shoot early only for his effort to be deflected behind, with the resulting corner coming to nothing. Town used the right side to great effect, but with a combination of good defending and poor balls in, VCD were largely untroubled, while at the other end, Tyrus Gordon-Young, back from injury, was causing all sorts of problems for the home rear-guard but VCD were unable to make capital of some good openings.
Dereham created a chance in the first minute of the second half when a throw reached Ryan Crisp who turned neatly just outside the 6 yard area, but he was denied by a superb block tackle from Joe Bruce with the ball being deflected behind, and when the short corner was played in, Frantz Tchonang again averted the danger with another fine tackle. The Vickers then began to be more dominant with Kris Newby breaking down the right and driving the ball across the 6 yard box, but it just eluded the onrushing Gordon-Young. VCD were having a good spell, pinning Town in their own half, and when the home side did break on the counter the VCD back four were in commanding form and were rarely troubled. A Dereham free kick was blocked by Kaka Dembele with the ball reaching Newby in the clear where he raced down the right before playing in Connor Hogan who got past his man, but keeper Will Viner saved well low down. The Vickers kept pressing and came closest to scoring when Kris Newby again got past his man on the right, before cutting in and firing towards the far post past the keeper, where Gordon-Young slid in but could only divert the ball against the keeper and behind for a corner. Substitute Jack Stevenson then picked out Kris Newby with a delightful diagonal ball over defender Jackson Ramm, where he cut inside only to see his drive blocked to safety. Dereham had the last chance to salvage the points when a ball in from the flank from Dan Beaumont fell loose in the visitors’ area, but Joe Gatting shot weakly wide when well placed. On the day a decent point for the Vickers under the circumstances, which sees them handily placed to make a move towards the play-off places.
