THE VICKERS TAKE CONTROL AT ASHFORD

ASHFORD UNITED 2 VCD ATHLETIC 5

The Vickers did what they have been threatening to do in recent games when, after creating a number of early chances, enough were converted to put the game beyond a youthful Ashford outfit. Strangely, in the opening 5 minutes there was no sign of things to come as United’s lively wide man Tyrell Richardson-Brown got the enthusiastic crowd going with some good runs down the flank, but although creating chances they were unable to convert them before VCD got into their stride. Aymun El-Moyhalbel broke from deep before setting Kemo Darboe clear down the left flank, but from his ball in Steve Carvell had his shot blocked, only to head the rebound against the bar. Then a long kick from keeper Joe Mant saw Darboe get through a square defence, but he fired over the bar. The pressure was constant as United were pegged back, but they were dangerous on the counter and a long diagonal ball picked out Richardson-Brown, but he shot straight at Mant. VCD had another chance when Siao Blackwood and Moyhalbel combined to set up the lively Omar Lawson, but keeper Aaron Whartton blocked with his legs. The Vickers finally went ahead on 13 minutes when Carvell threaded a neat ball through the home defence, leaving Kemo Darboe to run on and slot the ball low into the bottom corner. Carvell then again put Darboe through, but after holding off Lee Shearer he touched the ball just over the bar. There was little respite as from Wharrton’s goal-kick, a United player headed the ball back into his own half where Lawson picked up the loose ball and ran on without being closed down, before sending a fierce drive into the net. Carvell then had another effort blocked before a quick free kick caught out the Ashford defence, with Darboe again getting clear before rifling home. Ashford were finding the going tough but got a lifeline when Richardson-Brown made ground before playing the ball wide to substitute Conner Westney, who sent a superb shot into the far corner past Mant. The joy was short lived however as Mant’s long kick again caught out the home defence with Steve Carvell breaking through to lob Whartton for VCD’s fourth goal. A minute later it was five as Omar Lawson cut in from the left, taking the ball square, before setting himself up to fire low into the corner.
As a contest the game was over and it was expected that the Vickers would go on to consolidate their advantage, but when they gave the ball away it was played quickly forward to Richardson-Brown who got clear, only for Mant to block his shot, but the ball fell kindly and Richardson-Brown poked the ball home. To their credit Ashford upped their game and made something of a contest of it with some decent attacks, but the blistering heat together with the unpredictable bounce on the artificial surface saw attackers and defenders have problems with where the ball was going, and many promising moves at both ends were thwarted. VCD came close to a sixth goal when Carvell’s deep corner was headed powerfully goal-wards by Junior Baker, and although seemingly over the line the appeals were dismissed by the assistant. Then from a free kick, Emmanuel Osei got clear only to send his effort wide, before Lawson made space in the area before sending a left foot shot against the foot of a post, and a repeat move immediately after saw him send a right foot effort narrowly wide. Ashford had some late counters, but some resolute defending by George Lutaaya, Junior Baker and Jeff Imudia was enough to see off any chances of United reducing the arrears. Not a great performance from the Vickers in the second period, but they did what they had to do to secure 3 valuable points.
