NEWSLETTER No. 1
June 2021

It has been suggested that we re-instigate the Jockstrap, the legendary newsletter from years ago, when the world was black and white, pre-Covid, pre-Brexit, pre-whatever bandwagon is the newest mode of outrage. Then I thought ‘’What can we call it? The Jockstrap will surely offend the Woke Generation and any of those north of Hadrian’s wall. So, we will leave it as the relatively innocuous ‘Newsletter’.
I’ll try to get this out to you every so often, by e-mail for those who don’t subscribe to Facebook, Tinder, TikTok, Grindr, Snapchat, Snapdragon, or whatever. If you don’t get this, then we haven’t got your e-mail. But then, you won’t know about it anyway. We will try to keep you informed of what’s going on at the Club, any gossip, chitchat, scandal. If I miss you out, please don’t take offence. It’s just that I missed a few classes in ExtraSensory Perception at school.
So, where shall we kick off?

This is your chance to find out how the Club is doing financially, health-wise; to vote in new Committee members, captains etc. There are some posts we desperately need to fill Dave Oliver and Sue Archer are talking of stepping down next year. Dan Ackary and Heidi Carslaw are standing down this year. We still need a Kitchen Manager.
25th JULY– JUNIOR RUGBY fun training and presentation day. 4-15 year olds.
31 JULY subject to yet another lockdown, we will be holding a Summer BBQ and dishing out a few awards. This is also the date of the 2nd Lions Test, so this may well be an epic day. Talking of the Lions Tour, we are in the process of acquiring Sky to show all the Lions matches, so keep your eyes peeled on our various media outlets for further news.
12th/ 13th AUGUST JUNIOR RUGBY will be hosting a training camp with Saracens . Lots of the kids joined these over the Easter holidays, so we’re delighted to have the opportunity to welcome the Saracens development coaches at Vigo. This will be bookable via Saracens website, once they advertise we will share the link with you all. The cost will be approx.. £35 per child for 7 to 15 year age group.
15TH AUGUST – JUNIOR RUGBY fun training session for 4-15 year olds.

TRAINING Junior section (7 to 15 year olds) are having sessions on Thursday evening throughout the Summer. We've had a couple of U8 parents ask about mid-week training so just wanted to clarify that this is only running for the U9/10 & U11/12 plus Garrick is continuing to run sessions on Sundays for the U13/14/15.
JOHN WHITEHEAD (DIRECTOR OF RUGBY AND HEAD COACH says
Training started on the 1st of June officially, for the month of June training will consist of handling drills and structured touch rugby games with the emphasis on
spacial awareness ,miss matches, defence awareness and organisation of attack and defence . When we get into July we will get into the structure of our game plans and how best to utilise the vast talent we have within the club. Probably, like you al,l I can’t wait to get back into that game day environment. We went into our last season under-prepared, both with our pre-season preparation and not enough warm up matches. Let's not let that happen again this season. It will be as good as the effort and commitment we put into it ,if we put the work, effort, desire ,sweat and tears into it, we will reap the rewards. Your training attendance and match day availability will be key to our success,
Let's go for it boys - John Whitehead

COACHES NEEDED – JUNIOR RUGBY An essential part of Vigo RFC is developing our own talent. But we have a shortfall of coaches at some age levels. If you are interested in becoming a Coach, the Club will pay for your Training Course. Please contact Graham Smith for details.

FUND RAISING / CHARITIES Congratulations to the Szodi Family who have walked/ cycled Route 66 to raise money for the Club – over £2000 and still counting. Theo and Edwin Haydon also (virtually) walked to Disneyland Paris, raising over £250 for the Club. Natali Alvarez had her beautiful locks cut off to raise money for the Little Princess Trust which raises money to pay for wigs for children suffering from cancer. The Nightingales trekked round London raising money for the Alzheimer’s Society. Again, I stress , forgive me if I have left anyone out.

I also wish to thank all of those who have made a contribution to the nation throughout the pandemic, from NHS staff to key workers, to volunteers, shop workers , delivery drivers……I could go on. You know who you are. You deserve a massive vote of thanks from us all.

CLUB FINANCES Recently a question was asked of Dave Oliver about Club income on match day. He was able to furnish these figures
Match Fees Comparison Income v Costs
Income
Average £100 per game
Expenditure (per game)
Physio £60
Referee £22.50
Laundry £12
Match Food £40

Total Expenditure £134.50
Expenditure average based on home and away costs. Referee and Match Food
costs only for home games.

Of course, other expenditures include utility bills, insurance , rent and rates etc etc. So, as you can see, the Club relies heavily on Bar takings, VP donations, our Sponsors and fund raising through our Social Events. The Committee is determined to try to keep Annual Subs and Weekly Match Fees at the present levels – the lowest by a considerable amount in the local area. As we do not have a ‘’Feeder School’’, we really rely on the Junior conveyor belt, and friends of present players, so by keeping our subs and fees down low, we hope to attract players by this route.

OTHER NEWS.
Darren Campbell’s son, Cory, has been crowned the Scottish Under 17’s 3000 metre Champion. A remarkable achievement considering Cory is just 14 years old. Our heartiest congratulations to Cory.

That’s it for now.

I really hope we can get to all of you . If we haven’t, it’s because I do not have your email address. And again, I am sorry if I haven’t mentioned you winning the South East origami Championships, or you’ve grown a massive pumpkin – no euphemisms intended.

As we progress and I get a positive feedback from this Newsletter, then I shall continue to try to grow it

Until then, stay safe, stay positive. Above all, stay healthy

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s been emotional.
