Terry Papworth has had to step down as Head Coach, due to his commitments with Gravesend Grammar School (who by the way are having a fantastic season) and recently having been appointed coach of Kent under-17's. Obviously, Terry cannot commit his time to Vigo RFC with all this on his plate (as well as becoming a father recently.)
All of us at the Club wish Terry all the very best for the future and assure him that he will always be welcome at Swanswood.
So, we are delighted to welcome Nick Warren as Head Coach for the rest of the season
Nick was born in Chislehurst and has coached at a high level for many years. Unfortunately, 4 years ago Nick suffered a catastrophic brain haemorrhage, almost dying . Now, Nick has got the taste once more and wants to re-start his coaching career. Needless to say, he feels that starting at a lower level will give him the chance to evaluate his progress, and Vigo RFC suits his agenda. Naturally we are delighted to have someone of Nick's ability at Swanswood.
Nick is obviously impaired physically, but our players have attested that he is absolutely razor sharp mentally and they have already enjoyed a couple of sessions with Nick, with numbers already increasing I am told he does not suffer fools gladly !!! They have been enjoyable sessions and some of the players have told me that they can see that Nick will bring vast experience and know how to our training sessions. Nick is in the process of recruiting a couple of player coaches to help, (although probably not his son who is Old Elthamians' 1st XV fly half !)
Nick's story is inspiring, a story of courage and redemption. In fact, he is making plans to shortly reach Everest Base Camp to demonstrate that his injury will not impair his determination, and hopes to be a role model for other people who have suffered such catastrophic injury. I am delighted that Vigo RFC will help him on his road to full recovery.
