A huge Thank You to all the guys and gals that helped make Saturday a great success. The weather could not have been better although at 8.30 a sharp (and mercifully) short shower caused a few worried looks to the skies, but luckily the rain passed quickly and the sun shone on us.
Nick McPherson had taken the job on, and he admitted that it was a bit last minute, but the support he got from many of the Club members was outstanding. If I try to name everyone who lent a hand, then I'm going to miss someone out and offend them. So, you know who you are, give yourself a hearty hug. those that didn't, well, there's always next year. Some of you went above and beyond - again , a mighty thanks. A special hand, however, must go to Sue who kept the two bars going into the night with her band of helpers
There were 9 teams - Rubber Dinghy Rapids (a Gravesend XV), Aylesford Bulls, Maidstone RFC, Island Drifters (always a crowd favourite), Folkestone, Gravesend Grammar School Old Boy's, EPPW (East Peckham and Paddock Wood), Swanley and, of course, a Vigo XV. Plus, we had Aylesford Ladies and Vigo Vixens, who had two really enjoyable matches.
Rubber Dinghy Rapids won the Men's Tournament, beating Aylesford in an entertaining Final, so congratulations to both teams. we must thank all the teams who came along. I heard a lot of complimentary noises from many players. Also, the teams who helped clear up the litter restored my faith in our level of rugby.
After the presentations, the patio filled with revellers as George Harrison (our GH, not the famous moptop) and Nick McPherson ran through their repertoire with guest appearances by Kieran Hall and Marissa Leyden - who both shocked many people with their terrific voices - who knew?). I think it was Aylesford who entered into the party atmosphere with some outstanding fancy dresses, so well done you.
It looked like it was developing into an epic night but your correspondent was way past his bed time, so I had to leave, get my Horlicks (not a euphemism) and get tucked up in bed by the nurse.
Once again, THANK YOU to Nick and all those who helped to make it such a memorable day.
