COVID-19 has hit people and businesses in many different ways and sadly, more often than not, it's been for the worse. Vigo RFC is no exception. Like many others, our club was unable to open fully during much of 2020 and now with a country-wide lockdown at the beginning of 2021, with no clear end in sight, it's had to close its doors again.
Most of you know but for those who don't, the club is home to over 250 members, young and old, and is an integral part of the Vigo community so as a family we are aiming to raise some money to ensure the club can continue to offer community rugby at all levels and continue to provide a social hub for its members and their guests.
To do this we will be taking on the challenge of Route 66 - virtually!
By combining walking, running and cycling we will aim to complete the 2280-mile journey as soon as we can (hopefully August 1st) but the latest will be by the start of the local 2021 rugby season in September (whether we have one or not!); although our finish line will be Vigo RFC rather than Santa Monica pier on the sunny Californian coast.
All our mileage will be logged in Strava and you will be able to track our journey on Instagram here: http://www.instagram.com/theszodisconquerroute66 where we will post regular updates.
We have setup a Just Giving page here -https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/michael-szodi
If you can spare anything we will be eternally grateful, and your contribution will go a long way to ensuring the club remains at the heart of this small community.
Our challenge starts on Monday 1st February!!
Some news about Mike, Louise and Oliver's progress:
24th February 2021 - We are now midway through Week 4 of our Route 66 challenge and we are fast approaching 200 miles.
Week 1 went really well but we were hampered in Week 2 by Storm Darcy 2 which put us behind our daily schedule. Last week we managed to pick up the pace and we have made it to the famous Route 66 gas station just outside Springfield, Illinois.
We still have a whopping 2080 miles to go and approximately 150 days to complete them but we're excited about the challenge that still lays ahead of us.
We have also reached 45% of our target which is to raise an initial £1000, but we don't want to stop there; we would love to smash through this and collect as much as we can for a club that has made us so welcome in the years we have been associated with it. So please, if you can spare anything we would be eternally grateful.
I do want to especially mention Oliver who has been really keen to rack up his own miles and has already completed 26 - a virtual marathon!
With the update from Boris on the 22nd Feb we are so looking forward to finishing at an open rugby club where we can sink a few pints with everyone, hopefully in the sunshine - at our current rate our aim is to finish around August 1st which is a month earlier than we initially predicted.
A massive thank you to those who have already supported us, we really do appreciate it.
25th March 2021 - The last month has been very productive in terms of mileage completed and most importantly funds raised.
We have covered 625 miles (352 already this month with 6 days to go) which is 27% of the way through and we have left Missouri, passed through Kansas (very briefly) and are now into Oklahoma on our way to Tulsa!
The most important thing is that with your support we have surpassed our initial fundraising target and have now raised £1155. We aren't stopping there though as we have another 1650 miles still to go so plenty of time to increase that amount.
Please visit our sponsorship page above if you would like to support us and our rugby club.
Again, a massive thank you to you all for your continued support. See you in a month for another update!
Update today (17 April)
. Just finished another ride this morning so our stats are - 941 miles completed, 1338 to go with 104 days left. We have currently raised a total of £1325 so with The Haydon's magnificent effort the grand total is £1580!
