It is with the greatest sorrow that I have to tell you that on Tuesday 22 June, Warren Lee was sadly take from us.
Warren was a larger than life character, in both senses of the word. In fact, when he came to the Club over 10 years ago and announced he was a full back, Mark Murphy took one look at his , shall we say, less than svelte form, and thought ‘’Really?’’. Then Warren caught the ball, punted it miles down the pitch, and Murph said ‘’That’ll do for me.’’ Warren went on to play with some distinction, captaining the 2nd XV in the season 2016-17. In fact, Warren decided that there was probably a bit too much running around at full back and graduated to the front row, where he demonstrated great skill and even breaking into the 1st XV.
Warren was originally a footballer, playing for Joydens Wood and Titans as a ‘’dominant’’ centre half – Soccerspeak for ‘’he could dish it out a bit’’). But, without disrespect to his former football playing teammates, it was rugby where he came into his own, enjoying the banter of the rugby changing room, taking it in great humour and giving it with a sharp sense of wit. I suppose being a West Ham supporter helped sharpen that sense of humour He was also a decent golfer, the holder of the Vigo Open, as well as a regular player for the Villager Golf Society.
When you read Facebook and the tributes – so many of them – the words ‘’great guy’’, ‘’always made you laugh’’, ‘’selfless’’, ‘’big hearted’’, ‘’nicest bloke’’ occur time and time again. On Sunday the Club was thronged by so many people who honoured his memory with a minute’s applause. It wasn’t just his rugby mates but, seemingly, half the Village who turned up, such was the effect he had on people’s lives.
Warren was loved by so many people. He will leave a massive hole in our hearts, but more so in his beloved Annie’s, in Dan’s, his parents’ Bernadine and Kevin’s. In Shannon and Bianca’s. In Timonie, Abigail and Bob’s . And, of course, his nephews and nieces. We, the Vigo family, join Warren and Annie’s family in grieving for one of the nicest blokes, taken from us far too soon.
Warren, it was a pleasure and an honour. Love you, big guy.
