BEN’S MARAUDERS FLYING HIGH

Vigo’s second team consolidated their place at the top of the table with a comprehensive victory over Canterbury who were lying in second place. The score wasn’t really a reflection of the game, Canterbury working hard throughout. Vigo were pretty clinical throughout, taking their chances well, and defending well when Canterbury fought back.
Vigo opened the scoring after a good catch and drive from a line out. Recycling the ball well, Sam Smith drove for the line, stopped short he found Will Castle in close support who duly scored. Canterbury replied with some good attacking, Vigo forced into conceding penalties, but they gradually lifted the mini siege. Returning to the offensive, Harry Pattison made a typical scampering break, and Ollie Stringer was on hand to go over (‘’Amazed he passed it’’ said Ollie.
Canterbury picked up their pace and subjected Vigo to some pressure but a combination of good defending and loose passing ensured that Vigo’s line remained intact. Their next attack demonstrated the difference between the two sides. Pat Norton sent out a long pass, which landed at Connor Cutts’ feet, but the promising winger scooped up the ball and duly scored. Ben Mayhew, another hugely promising addition to the Club, then scored after great work by Stringer. This prompted a furious counter by Canterbury, working their left winger into space, scoring a deserved try. Chris King benefitted from a fluent backs move (‘’Oh, f*** me,’’ came a plaintive cry from the Canterbury ranks,’’they’ve got backs moves as well.’’) before a brace of tries by George Harrison and a fine try by Pattison, catching the Canterbury defence napping with a quick tapped penalty, gave Vigo a commanding 42 – 5 lead by the break. Actually, pat Norton converted the first of Harrison’s tries, disproving the comment from the sidelines which included the words ‘’banjo’’ and ‘’cows posterior’’ or something.
Vigo might have rested on their collective laurels for the second half, but captain Ben Buckland emptied his bench, the newcomers adding fresh impetus to the side. Vigo began the half a bit on the back foot as the newcomers assimilated themselves into the team. But a good handling move found both Sam Smith and Will castle lurking on the wing (Prescience or having a breather?). They set up Lewis Pitchell who was stopped just short. Vigo continued to attack and Dave Dunn scored a similar try to Pattison’s, taking a quick tap and lunging through a startled Canterbury defence. Although, Canterbury continued to counter hard, Vigo’s defence were tested but not found wanting, beating back the sporadic raids. Chris King scored his second as Vigo’s forwards rumbled forward with some fine interpassing. Then came a score which brought much hilarity. Dave Dunn made atypical break from deep, thundering towards the line, desperately searching for support (which was basically standing back admiring his break). On the 22, Dunn executed a brilliant Crossfield kick to Pitchell who was laughing as he scored. Ollie Stringer, taking over the kicking duties fromPat Norton, converted all three second half tries (But they were all in front of the posts’’ said Pat’’ whereas mine where all from a different postcode’’))
Canterbury were fast running out of players, and when they were down to 13 after a couple more injuries, Connor Cutts and Kieran Hall volunteered to play for the opposition. This is what rugby, and this Club, is all about. Excellent sportsmanship. Mind you, Connor was not the flavour of the month when he promptly scored for Canterbury. Apparently, he hesitated on the point of crossing the line, fearing disapproval by his (ex) team mates. But he scored and needless to say was immediately castigated by his former team mates.
And that was about it. A thoroughly pleasing day for the Club with a collective score line of 99-10

Ben Buckland : the score doesn't reflect the game. Canterbury really made us work hard, and I have to say a couple of our tries were against the run of play. But, I am really pleased with the squad of players and their attitude.
