Arguably, Vigo made a fatal error by playing the wrong tactics. Electing to kick downhill in the first half, they played ‘uphill’ tactics downhill, then played ‘downhill’ mode uphill, which discombobulated the team to a certain extent. East Peckham took advantage of their opponents’ confusion and quickly scored, a neat passing move down the line ushering in Kai Ireland. Gradually, Vigo started to get back into the match, a series of forward drives eating up territory. A penalty allowed them to boot the ball into the corner, winning the line out and driving forward. Sam Smith, who cant seem to stop scoring lately, peeled off the back of the maul to plunge over.
Thus, greatly encouraged, Vigo returned to offence, but didn’t quite get their tactics right, East Peckham rather too easily, withstanding Vigo’s advances. However, just before half time, Vigo rolled forward a series of driving mauls and good ball retention, throwing their opponents back to their own line. Liam Evans was able to squirm over to score, the ever improving Nathan Covill converting.
East Peckham quickly gathered what tactics to use with the aid of the slope, kicking into the corners and inviting Vigo to attack from deep. The Villagers failed to make much headway, East Peckham running in three tries, through Ireland, Colin Austen and Ross Funnell, Austen converting twice.
Try as they might,Vigo just could not get into second gear, allowing East Peckham to dominate both territory and possession. However, as time began to run out, Vigo regathered their wits and spent the last ten minutes on the attack, battering away at a stubborn East Peckham defence. Callum Gibson kicked a penalty, but , alack and alas, that was all Vigo could squeeze from an obdurate visiting team.
