The Falcons spent the first half of a physical game on their heels, as Newport News crashed their forwards to gain ground steadily, resulting in a 0-14 deficit for Virginia Beach at halftime.
But the Falcons caught a second breath and returned the favor in the second half, tying the score at 14-14 with less than 10 minutes to play. Beach was able to press forward with a final possession to Newport News' own try line, but lost possession in a ruck only several meters from scoring. I
Instead of allowing their flyhalf to clear the kick, Newport News' scrumhalf elected to attempt a box kick, resulting in Brian "Butters" Bidder blocking the kick, recovering the ball, and diving into the try zone with the game-winning try as time expired. This was truly an unforgettable moment in Falcons history.
