WADEBRIDGE Camels head coach Mike Rawlings was much happier with his side’s performance after a narrow defeat at fourth-place Sidmouth.
“The guys played really well. We had three players starting (Sam Chapman, Aiden Cullis and Jody Briskham) who had not played in the first team all season, with two of them at prop,” said Rawlings.
“We attacked from the start. We said we just wanted to run the ball and stop worrying about conditions, and the guys threw everything into it, and we were really unfortunate. We just couldn’t string together the last pass or the last phase.
“Both defences were good. We conceded one try from a driving maul, and the other was a crossfield kick where we had a flanker out of position on the wing, but outside of that we defended well, and we almost deserved the win really, based on how much we were attacking and the rugby we were playing.
“When we got to 10-10, the guys just took their foot off the pedal for 20 minutes, and were almost happy accepting the draw, which was frustrating from a coach’s point of view, and it wasn’t until five minutes to go that Sidmouth scored their last try and we started playing rugby again, but to push a team like Sidmouth on their own soil was very pleasing.”
Sidmouth took the lead with a try by hooker Aiden Taylor after a driving maul from a line-out, converted by Dan Retter.
Retter and opposite number James Grubb then traded penalties to make it 10-3 to the hosts.
Wadebridge levelled the scores with a try by winger Rhys Bright, converted by Grubb, but with time running out, Retter’s crossfield kick was gathered by scrum-half Harry Rumens, playing on the wing, and he fed James Powell to score the match-winning touchdown.
Wadebridge will be hoping to at least score some points when they take on second-place Kingsbridge at home on Saturday (2.15pm), having been nilled in their last two games at Molesworth Field by Exeter University and Tiverton.
Kingsbridge suffered a surprise 31-10 defeat at Tiverton last weekend, and Rawlings said: “Some points would be nice, but we are going for the win!”
