Okehampton 19 Wadebridge Camels 0

WADEBRIDGE Camels failed to score a point for the third time in six matches as they slipped to defeat at a very muddy Oaklands Park.
It was always going to be a difficult game against the second-place Okes, and it was not helped by the conditions, with the match moved to the second-team pitch.
It was still 0-0 after 50 minutes, but Okehampton then took the lead with a penalty try, while the visiting pack was down to seven men following a yellow card for tight-head prop Jack Scott, with Tom Powell adding the conversion.
The second home try was scored when scrum half Joey Bruce moved the ball out to winger Tom McGratton, and a counter-attack started by full back Gareth Espin was finished off by flanker Dean Abrams under the posts for the third, which Powell improved to complete the scoring.
Wadebridge head coach Mike Rawlings said: “Fair play to Okehampton, they asked us which pitch we wanted to play on, and both pitches were relatively bad, but the second-team pitch was flatter than the first-team one.
“It was a frustrating day. We had the wind with us in the first half, and we unfortunately didn’t come away with any points from that.
“In the first ten minutes, we were all over them and we were camped down in their 22, we were building some good momentum and we were really strong in attack.
“When we got a penalty, the boys decided to go for the posts, and we missed it, and we lost our momentum.
“It would have been nice to have taken the scrum option and kept the attack on, and the second we missed that penalty and they exited, we put pressure on ourselves, and pressure is not really working for us at the moment.
“We started giving away silly penalties, eight against us in one half, and we can’t really expect to win games if we are giving those types of penalties away.
“Discipline was a bit of a factor, and the refereeing wasn’t the best either, and taking those both into account, we kind of butchered the game ourselves.”
Rawlings believed the final scoreline flattered their hosts, and said: “Okehampton were good, but I feel for the guys. Our defence was brilliant again, but we had a penalty try against us when we were one short up front, and their last try as well, I would argue there was a huge knock-on by their full back in the lead-up to it, and the referee didn’t see it, so I would see the game as 7-0 really.
“A lot of teams aren’t scoring many points against us, and it proves our defence is working, but we need to cross that try line as well.”
Wadebridge are at home on Saturday (2.15pm) when they take on Cullompton, who are two places and two points above them in the table.
Wadebridge: Pengelly, Bright, Collings, Pretty, B Thomas, D Thomas, Humphrey (capt), Treleaven, Tarby, Scott, Dawe, Johns, Blackmore, Cross, M Grubb. Replacements: Burnard, Blemings.
Okehampton: Tries: penalty try, McGratton, Abrams; Cons: Powell (2).
