Wadebridge Camels 19 Truro 30
By Nigel Walrond
WADEBRIDGE Camels head coach Mike Rawlings says he believes it is time to sit his players down and ask them which level they wish to play at.
It follows a disappointing home defeat to Cornish rivals Truro, when the Camels threw away a 19-6 half-time lead by conceding 24 points without reply.
Rawlings said the dramatic turnaround left him “speechless” after the game, with the result plunging them back into relegation trouble, but he remains confident they can avoid the drop.
“In the first half we produced probably the best half of rugby we have played all season, followed by our worst half of rugby, and it was so frustrating,” he told Guardian Sport.
“We lost Mark Grubb and Richard Treleaven through injuries, and Matt Tarby took a knock to the head and had to go off and then come back on again, and at half-time we went down to a weakened side.
“But with a 13-point lead, we felt we could finish off the game, and I almost didn’t know what to say to the guys after the match. All I could do was shake my head.
“The guys really wanted it in the first half, and they proved they can play very good rugby, but it was like the half-time whistle went and a completely different side came out in the second half.
“We did lose a few leaders, but we lacked the passion we needed, and you could tell Truro really wanted it.
“Five minutes before the end, we were trailing by four points and a fight broke out on our five-metre line, and rather than defending our try line, we had lads running in for a punch-up, and Truro scored from it.
“We are going to have a couple of sit-down sessions now and chat about where the boys want to play, and what level they want to play at, because at the minute they are not putting the time and effort in for the level we need to play at.”
The defeat dropped Camels to third from bottom of the table, a point clear of the bottom two, and now facing a “must win” game at basement dwellers Penryn on Saturday.
“We are now down towards the bottom of the league and all the teams have games in hand on us, and our next few results have got to be nothing but wins really,” said Rawlings.
“Penryn are fighting relegation as well and it is going to be tough going down there, but we will hopefully have a good training week and the guys will be up for it.”
The Camels were hoping to welcome back some experienced players from injury in the New Year, but Rawlings said that was not likely to happen now, and with Grubb and Treleaven both set to miss the Penryn game through injury, he is likely to have to don his own boots again.
“We are hoping Matt Ballard will be back fit again this weekend, but Dan Lumb is looking like potentially not being back until the end of February now, and maybe not even this season, and the same with Gary Gynn, so it is going to need a lot of hard graft from the boys to see this season out," said Rawlings.
Wadebridge led 19-6 at the interval, with tries by back rowers Adam Blackmore and Mark Grubb, and winger Dom Hawkey, and fly half James Grubb converting two. Truro stand off Daryl Riches kicked two penalties.
But in the second period, Truro scored four tries, from tight-head prop Ethan Pattison, No.8 Jack Tidball (2) and replacement Harvey Bell, with Riches converting two of them to mark an incredible comeback.
