Cullompton 18 Wadebridge Camels 14
By Nigel Walrond
WADEBRIDGE Camels face a crucial game at home to Crediton on Saturday after going down at Cullompton.
The Camels are in danger of getting sucked into relegation trouble, with five successive league defeats leaving them hovering just above the drop zone, and with the teams behind them all having games in hand.
Wadebridge finish their campaign with home matches against Crediton, who are one place above them in the division, and mid-table Devonport Services, so their fate is still very much in their own hands, but they need to get back to winning ways.
It was Cullompton’s first victory in six starts and they took the lead with a penalty by inside centre Adam Pearce, while Danny Thomas missed one for Wadebridge.
The hosts stretched their lead to ten points when openside flanker Sean Mardell set up a try for No.8 Sam Harris, with Pearce adding the extras.
Scrum half Tom Frankpitt then notched a further try for Cully after blindside flanker Steve Nockles fed him off the back of a scrum, before No.8 Mark Grubb got Camels back into the game with a try, converted by Thomas, to leave them 15-7 behind at the interval.
Cully edged 11 points in front with a Pearce penalty, but he then got himself yellow-carded, and Wadebridge – with head coach and former Cornwall and Cornish All Blacks flanker Mike Rawlings bringing himself off the bench - responded with a try from blindside flanker Matt Ballard, converted by Thomas.
Camels, for whom full back Will Pengelly made some good runs during the game, applied pressure in the final stages in search of a match-winning score, but Cully hung on to leave Wadebridge with the consolation of a losing bonus point but still worryingly looking over their shoulders.
