Stobswell RFC 0 - 34 Waid Academy FP RFC

John Murray7 Nov 2011 - 11:58

Waid triumphed in their latest Caledonia League 3 match against 3rd placed Stobswell. Eric Anderson reports;

Waid emerged with a bonus point to come away with five league points and keep up the pressure on Panmure at the top of the league. Once again Waid travelled with a full squad creating selection headaches for Waid skipper Kevin Anderson.

From the start, Waid fly-half Paul Lindsay kicked to Stobswell but his kick went out on the full to give a scrum to the home side on halfway. Quite possibly this was the only mistake the New Zealander made all game as he thereafter produced a virtuoso performance to steer Waid to victory in his last game for several months.

Waid were soon on the attack on after a grubber kick from Lindsay kindly ricocheted into his arms he sprinted clear to score out wide. Lindsay calmly put the conversion over to open up a 7-0 lead. A penalty soon followed when Stobswell went off their feet at a maul. Lindsay made no mistake from 40 yards to comfortably extend Waid's lead. Waid repelled Stobbie's attack and with the forwards in fine form, Waid had the perfect platform for Lindsay to unleash the backs. Richard Bach was back to his marauding best and it was from one of his powerful runs that winger Kato Blockley was set free to score a great try. Lindsay converted and suddenly Waid had a 17 point lead. Blockley had a great chance to grab a 2nd try but the final pass from Lindsay just evaded his grasp and Stobswell cleared. There was no easing up by Waid who dominated their opponents at the scrums and were in complete control at the lineouts. This coupled with clever tactical kicking from Lindsay, George Hodge and John Murray meant there was no respite for the home side. Lindsay created a chance out of nothing with a good angled run which split the defence and sent him clear for his 2nd try. He picked himself up and converted to move Waid 24-0 ahead. A further Lindsay penalty before half-time gave Waid a solid lead but still in search of the bonus point try.

Stobswell started the 2nd half with increased ferocity and tempo and had Waid on the back foot in the early stages of the 2nd half. Waid were solid in defence, none more so than Waid lock Fergus Middleton who produced the tackle of the game to literally knock the stuffing out of the home side. Waid became bogged down in their half and it took 20 minutes before they could string the phases of play together to get on the front foot and go looking for the crucial bonus point try. Waid had a chance to snatch the try when Eric Anderson won the race for a kick and chase but the referee claimed the ball was not grounded. Undeterred, Waid soon returned to the attacking 3rd of the pitch. Waid's patience finally paid off when replacement scrum half Paul Hanlon finished off a fine attacking move. Lindsay converted to maintain his 100% kicking record and leave the field with a 24 point haul. There was time to allow Rory Doak to make his Waid debut, replacing Waid captain Anderson at hooker. Stobswell came back at Waid but there was little time left for any response and Waid saw out time to earn the victory.

Man of the match went to Waid centre Richard Bach who produced his best game yet following a lengthy work-induced absence. His powerful running from the centre created no end of problems for the home defence and he did enough to pip Lindsay to the award.

Following the game Waid Captain Kevin Anderson stated, "This was a game of 2 halves. The first half was all about our attack and offence, but the 2nd half showed that we can defend well and stop the opposition scoring. We are all delighted with the win and the manner of victory. It was a bad loss for us at home to Stobswell at the start of the season but we made amends today. Paul Lindsay had an outstanding game and controlled our attacks, his kicking was deadly and we are going to miss him in the weeks and months ahead. We wish him all the best for his operation and recovery and hope to see him in Waid colours again."

Next up for Waid is a home tie against Crieff. Waid won away against the Perthshire side earlier in the season but know they cannot afford to take their opponents lightly. A pre-match lunch will be held within Waid Clubhouse and members wishing to attend are asked to notify Bill Hughes as quickly as possible. Lunch is served from 12 noon and the main course commences at Anstruther at 2pm. Training continues at Waid Cente on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7pm.
