Match report from Waid FP's first home game of the season against Stobswell.

It was the first home game of the season for Waid at the weekend and the improvements shown last week were obvious. Following a minute silence for Stobswell’s former coach, Waid kicked off towards the new school and were quickly awarded a penalty for good pressure on the Stobbie defence. The penalty was taken quickly and a score by the posts followed. That set the scene for the rest of the match with Stobbie struggling to contain the Waid game.

Close support and well set up plays allowed Waid to score from all parts of the pitch. A score came following from a lineout allowing the backs to drive through their opponents, then from the resultant kick off a good catch and drive opened the space for a score through the lines. Stobbie kept their heads up and scored a penalty but the Waid kept their heads up and stole a scrum from the base of their side and the ball was quickly swept out the backs and touched down under the posts.

More settled now, Waid took a clean lineout and a dart from the scrum half, George Hodge, left the way for Adam Shaw to score his first of four tries under the posts. Again, from the kick off, a quick change of direction in his own 22 from Stephen Denny to Mark Guthrie fooled the on rushing Stobswell and quick hands from him to Ally Brunton and then to Dylan Muir ran hard to the posts to touch down. Another stolen lineout allowed Alex Gregg to score followed by Mark Guthrie going from a short lineout to off load to Dylan, despite a neck tackle stopping Mark’s own progress.

The half ended with another good combination from the forwards setting up the backs to allow them in to score with good handling. The score allowed changes to be made and to allow Waid to try different people in different places. That did not, however, cause a significant change in the scoring spree. A try for captain Alan Drysdale started the half and then another quick penalty led to a try and then another followed from the kick off. A scrum take against the head led to another quick change of formation for the backs to score and then another penalty led to a further run from the backs. Finally, an unexpected change from a further penalty fooled the defence and Adam Shaw got in for his fourth try of the day. Overall it was a good spectacle for an appreciative home support and also for the players getting alternative options tried out.

Final score - 85-3

Scorers – Adam Shaw (4), Dylan Muir (4), Alan Drysdale (2), George Hodge, Mark Guthrie, Jamie Struthers, Ally Brunton and Alex Gregg.
