"They wanted it more than us"...….

It was a disappointing result today. What were your thoughts on the game?
I thought we were nowhere near the levels we have set ourselves as the season has progressed. I take nothing whatsoever away from Old Southendian Reserves as they fully deserved the victory. We didn't have the bit between our teeth, wasn't eager to get the game underway and to get stuck in and secure the points that we needed at this stage of the season.

Southendian players seemed to be more up for the game. Would you agree?
From the outset, they basically wanted every ball more than us, worked harder than us offensively and I don't think their keeper had much to do than pick the ball out of his net twice during the whole game. Losing Alf (Lindfield) just before half time was a blow, making our substitutions and having Brennan roll his ankle shortly after coming on, meant we played 35 minutes with 10 men. It didn't help, but I'd like to reiterate, we take nothing away from the Old Southendian Reserves performance on the day.

Do you think the gap between matches was a factor?
I've said before that we've managed to get over the hurdles of these huge gaps between our matches, but this is now the third or fourth time since the turn of the year where we've had to wait two weeks between matches and I think it has caught up with us. Surely the league must look at this as it certainly affects the fluidity of teams, both in keeping the players minds on the games, but also team performance as a whole. The league can't allow this to happen to other teams in the league in the future.

Southendian scored some great goals today. What were your thoughts on our opponents performance today?
We felt that the first two goals were avoidable. Certainly, the second goal we conceded, we just switched off. They scored some great team goals, but pick of the bunch was their 4th, which was a bit special from Stubbs.

It's a major blow for promotion. We play them again next weekend in what has to be a must-win game for us. How will you approach the game knowing how Southendians played today?
We now know what we have to do next week an what we will be up against so u could say it’s up to us to make up for today’s performance and
having a quick turnaround to do that will help. Mathematically we're still able to gain promotion, but these last two games will be critical for us.

What are you going to do to get the players heads up after today's defeat?
Our attitude will have to be spot on if we want to come away with the points. We know it is going to be tough, but hopefully the manner in which we lost, will spur the players on and give them the impetus to gain some form of revenge and get the 3 points we need.
