Walcot are taking part in a pilot scheme for the RFUs Kids First Rugby initiative.
30 clubs nationally have been asked to take part in this pilot programme, and Walcot is one of 6 in the South West. Kids First Rugby is targeted at U7 to U12 age groups, and the aim is to develop more confident, competent players by developing more confident, competent people.
It has been inspired by, among others, the New Zealand All Blacks, who believe that better people make better players. They have focused a lot on developing the person, and this has paid dividends not only in terms of producing better rugby players, but has provided a generation of children with a more positive outlook on life and sport in general.
There are three main parts to the Kids First Rugby programme:
1, Using the New rules of Play (NROP)
2, Taking a Game based approach to coaching
3, Utilising the Kids First sticker books to provide the children with positive feedback during each training session
At Walcot we have already been doing the first two parts, so we just need to add the final part which will help us provide better feedback to more children.
The RFU have introduced a character called Ruckley to act as the ambassador for kids rugby, and he features strongly in all of the collateral.
Kids First Rugby will be launched at Walcot on 30th March.
