Wallasey went to st Edwards with a full 20 man squad thanks to the help from Tom stead and Karl plant from Oldershaw. The warm up went well and everyone was ready for kick off.
Jack Liddell kicked off and due to a slow kick chase Wallasey found themselves on the back foot straight away with an offload from a tackle and then st Edwards winger running it in. This set the tone for the first 20 minutes with Wallasey not knowing how to respond to st Edwards kick chase distribution utilising the full width of the pitch. It seemed as though Wallasey were in for a tough afternoon but up stepped Jack Liddell offering his direct running from 10 sitting down his opposite number and going under the posts with the full back and covering flanker hanging onto him.
Wallasey didn’t have much possession of the ball but when we did we took the ball up and past the gain line on most occasions.
St Edwards were clinical in attack with their 9s decision making and speed being the difference a couple of times. Their 12s kicking distribution was very good and this was backed up with the chase from their fast wingers and full back. This allowed them to get behind our defensive line and run in some tries.
Positives from the game front row was dominant with Tom stead, Tim halls and Jake Hansen showing their aggression and technically brilliant scrummaging.
Welcome return to mike welsh who added some structure and stability across the pitch
Well done to Alex Lee Jenkinson for his debut at the 13 position stepping up with so many injuries.
We scored the most points against them so far in the league. St Edwards are a good team but are beatable if we take the game to them up front like we did in spells and sort our defensive positioning out for the return fixture at cross lane. Plenty to work on in training this week.
Man of the match goes to Nigel Brierley for his 2 tries from the back of breakdowns.
