Leading run-scorer of the decade takes on the big job ahead of 2020 season.

Wallasey Cricket Club are delighted to confirm that Alex Eagles will captain our first team in 2020.

The 27 year-old batsman succeeds Daniel Beaver who recently stood down from the role after five years at the helm.

On his appointment, Alex said:

"I’d like to start by thanking one of my oldest friends for everything he’s done over the past five years in his role as captain. Dan has worked tirelessly over the past few seasons to ensure that this club is in its strongest position ever and I know personally that he’s put absolutely everything into the role. It’s going to be an impossible act to follow that is for sure!

It’s still quite surreal for me to think of myself as first team captain of this great club. Ever since I can remember, I’ve dreamed of leading Wallasey and for me it’s the ultimate honour. As a youngster growing up, this is all you strive for in club cricket. I can certainly say that I’ll give it my absolute all in every way possible and hopefully make all those associated with the club proud.

From my perspective, I step into the captaincy with the club in a superb position. However, the main aim during my reign is for the continued growth of the club both on and off the field. We absolutely have to keep winning trophies in any capacity following on from the recent success of the 2XI, 3XI and Sunday 4XI, whilst also helping our juniors progress in line with the outstanding work Andy Ward and co. are doing every year.

Looking ahead to the new season, I’m personally very excited and truly honoured to lead the team out in such a competitive league. We should take great pride in the fact that we compete with some of the best club sides in the UK and, as a group of local lads, should certainly enjoy this challenge every weekend. With the talent we’ve got, I’m also hoping to go further in some cup competitions and this is definitely a priority for the upcoming 2020 campaign.

Lastly, I hope that everyone enjoys themselves under my captaincy and plays with a smile on their face. We’re so fortunate to be part of such a close-knit club, and we should never forget that.

Up the Sey,

Al"

Since making his debut in 2007, Alex has represented the first team on 313 occasions. In that time, he has compiled over 5500 runs in all competitions which include 25 fifties and three centuries.

He recently topped the category for most runs for the Sey in the past decade with 4656. From his earlier days as an all-rounder, he has also claimed 99 wickets as well as snare over 70 catches in the field.

The news comes prior to the release of the 2020 fixtures which are due to be made available in the next month or so.

All the best in the new role skip!
