We Are Going Up

Walingford have been promoted after seeing off Hilltop in the play-off final.

Both sides looked well up for the occasion and started creating chances right from the whistle. Hilltop started by testing Sam Baldock in the Wally goal with an early free kick that was struck straight into his hands. It was next Wallingford’s turn in front of goal but a square ball from Ty Hamilton was hit over the bar.

A couple of dangerous free kicks were awarded on the edge of the box and with recent form from set pieces a goal looked possible, but the first was ruled offside and the second was fired over. At the death of the half, miscommunication in the defence gave Hilltop a golden opportunity but a goal line clearance from Ben Taylor ensured the scores were level heading into half time.

Sam Baldock was forced into an excellent save not long into the second half when a ball was hit over the top of Wallingford for the attacking Hilltop player to run onto. In the 68th minute of the game the hosts opened the scoring with a looping header to give their side the lead in the play-off final.

With just 10 minutes left to play Wally were awarded a penalty that was calmly slotted home by Ricardo Benjamin to level the game. Both teams were fighting hard to find a winner in the final moments of the game with Euan Aitchinson hitting the bar and the rebound from Benjamin was saved by the keeper.

After 90 minutes the sides could not be separated and the game was tied 1-1 sending the match into extra time. 112 minutes into the game Wally took the lead and had Laurie Aitchinson to thank for the header that won the game. After the end of extra time score was 2-1 to Wally which saw them promoted to level 9 on the football pyramid.

A huge congratulations to Lee and the lads for the amazing season with the FA Vase run and promotion to finish it all off, what a season it has been!
