Walsall Under 16’s V Lichfield
Staffordshire Cup Final
Sunday 24th April 2016
Walsall and Lichfield met in the final of the staffs cup for the third time in four years at Wednesbury Rugby Club on Sunday. This was always going to be a tense affair. With both sides fielding strong teams, Walsall won the toss and decided to play down the slope. They were soon in the lead when, following a number of Walsall penalties, Jamie Harding crashed over for a try which was converted by Joe Tipson. Lichfield were quick to reply however when from a scrum in the Walsall 22 the ball was spun right for them to go over for a converted try despite what appeared to be obstruction by a Lichfield player. The game was turning into a very good game and Walsall regained the lead when Nico Watkins crashed the ball through in the centre. Again the try was converted by Joe Tipson. It looked like the game was going into half time with the scores as they were until Jamie Harding received the ball in space, chipped through and collected his own kick to go over under the posts for a try converted by Joe Tipson.
In the second half Walsall started well but were soon under pressure from a Lichfield side determined to make a comeback. Walsall held them out for a considerable amount of time until the referee yellow carded two Walsall players within a minute of each other. This meant that holes appeared in the Walsall defence allowing Lichfield to score three tries two of them converted to give them the lead 26 – 21. Walsall, back to full strength, then staged a comeback of their own and from some great play from deep within their half, played their way forward until close to the Lichfield line Jamie Harding managed to force himself against the base of the post for a try, Converted by Joe Tipson. With the clock having already passed the 35 min mark It looked like Walsall had edged the game but Lichfield were not to be denied and on the 47th min of the second half managed to force their way over in the corner to win 31 – 28. Congratulations have to go to both teams for the very high level of skill and commitment that they showed throughout the game.
