We're very much on a countdown to the start of the season. We've been working hard to make this coming summer the best season for our juniors for many years. We plan to organise more cricket so everyone who trains regularly plays games regularly and we have many more qualified coaches to further improve our training sessions.
Brand new for this season:
Reception age juniors - fun 45 minute sessions on Thursday
Year 1 and 2 juniors - a fun 45 minute game on Mondays.
Softball cricket sessions for girls on FridayYear 5, 6 and 7 - a weekly hard ball game at Nutter Lane, probably Tuesdays
Softball games, every other week early on Saturdays
More friendlies for those not in their age groups'first team.
A second hand kit and clothing store to help make cricket more affordable.
A social committee to organise some fun events and raise some money.
A selected junior to be '12th man' for the men's first team every home game.
New WhatsApp Community Groups to improve our communications - please do accept the invitation you should have received as this is how we intend to send important messages in future.
And of course we will enter the usual competitions, have our tapeball games for year 3 to 5 on Mondays and have the regular Thursday (girls) and Friday sessions.
However to make this all a reality and to make Wanstead the very best club in the country for juniors, we need your help. Please give some serious thought to joining our volunteer team, we're not asking for much of your time. In return you will be playing a part in our wonderful club and ensuring we can continue to be a place where 400 young people come and safely learn to play cricket and enjoy the company of their friends.
You don't have to have any cricket experience, we have many roles from running the second hand shop, or staffing the shed cafe to helping running a team, being an umpire or part of a newly formed social committee. You can find an outline of all the roles below. Please do put yourself forward - you can do so on this Google form and somebody will be in touch.
Many thanks
Jon Gritten
Wanstead Juniors, Inspiring a life long passion for cricket
Short job descriptions of volunteer roles at Wanstead CC
Please complete this short Google form to express your interest.
Umpiring - there’s no game without an umpire! You will get training and support and deep appreciation of the team’s manager.
Scoring - it’s now all done on an app and is pretty straightforward. You will receive training and again the deep appreciation of the team’s manager.
Coach - we have a big coaching team sharing their skills and love of cricket. If you’d like to ‘inspire a life long passion for cricket’, then please let us know.
Assistant team manager - we have a manager for each school year. However some squads have 35 children so we need assistant managers to ensure that juniors who may not make the first choice team are still involved regularly in matches. If you would like your junior to have more matches than they have in the past, this may be the role for you.
Running a match / or interclub games - we hope to organise more cricket this year, some of it mid-week. To do so we do need adults willing to run them. An in depth knowledge of cricket isn’t needed, more important is the ability to engage with and organise children.
Specifically we plan to organise weekly games at the club just for our own juniors and just for fun. Exact times to be agreed but probably
Mondays - 6 to 6.45, a fun 45 minutes for our year 1s and 2s.
Mondays - 6 to 7 - Tapeball games for our year 3s to 5s. This has been going for three years now and is great fun.
Tuesdays - 5.30 to 7.30 - a hardball game for our year 5s to year 7s.
Junior social committee - we have a great group of parents and friends who enjoy coming to the club on a Friday . We’re planning to set up a small group of parents to organise a number of social events - if this is your thing, please sign up!
Cricket hut cafe rota - we would like to open the little cafe in the hut every Friday and at all junior games. It sells soft drinks, tea and coffee, little snacks and beers. Could you join a rota? We’re hoping to get enough people so you’d do it every 4 or 5 weeks.
Much loved cricket clothing and equipment shop - buying new cricket clothing and equipment is expensive. We’d like to start a shop with people donating their used clothes and equipment to make cricket more affordable and generating some revenue for the club to be reinvested in junior training equipment
Fixture organiser - we are given the fixtures for all the competitions we enter. However each team has many Sundays where they don’t have a fixture, we’d like to change that. If you could help us here, you’d make a big impact on our juniors. All necessary support given.
Friday team - this is the busiest day of the week. We need people for our safeguarding team and for first aid.
Ground crew - we’d love for the clubhouse and grounds to be in tip-top shape and for us all to be proud of our club and environment. If you could spare some time to tidy the ground and apply the odd bit of varnish or are a general handyman/woman, this is the role for you.
Any other ideas - is there something you think the club needs that you could provide? We’re all ears.
