Thame Rangers 2 Wantage Town 2 (2-4 AET)
Wednesday night's eagerly awaited replay lived up to the billing and yet again there was nothing between the two sides over 90 minutes. Following the 2-2 draw at Wantage 10 days previously a bumper crowd of 115 were treated to another exciting game.
A late equaliser from BetVictor Southern League Wantage Town saved them from a a massive cup upset. Rangers had a free kick awarded that was committed in the box but given as being outside by referee Paul Green, denying a definite penalty (in the eyes of many) that would have made it 3-2.
Wantage lead early in the first half when a corner was allowed to travel all the way to the far post for a simple tap in. Undeterred Rangers quickly started to get back into the game & the excellent Dan Hatton equalised after 40 minutes after weaving his way through the defence. The second half was again end to end & it was Rangers who took the lead when Miles Baxter was put through over the top & finished clinically. Wantage now started to pile on the pressure & deservedly equalised with 10 minutes to go. Rangers then had a golden chance to seal the game when after a goalmouth scramble Zarius Edwards-Giraud hit the post from 6 yards.
The game headed into extra time and Wantage started to look the stronger. The first period did not bring any goals, it wasn’t until the last 7 minutes that Wantage finally made their pressure tell with another goal from a corner. Rangers tried to rally but couldn’t muster one final chance & eventually succumbed to another goal 2 minutes from time.
