A series of personal thoughts from the side of the pitch.

By Aiden Mynott

Well peeps it has finally happened. We all knew it was coming but the suddenness of it all took everyone by surprise. The silver lining is that after nearly 70 years I can at last say “The Queen is dead. Long live the King.”

Much TV time especially at the Bed Broadcasting Company has been spent following her coffin and the new King and Queen around, so a chance to get out and watch a real game of football at your local club must be extremely welcome.

How long will the King be on the throne is anyone’s guess. He’s been waiting longer than me to see a change in the monarchy. So, it’s not surprising with all the work he’s had to do over the last week or so he gets a bit niggly over a pen in Northern Ireland.

My old Mum, also 96, died in April so I have a little idea of the emotion he maybe going through. But as the saying I started with points out life must go on. So hopefully we will all be ready for the rumble in the desert in November, yes, it’s the World Cup. Will Santa send us the Jules Verne trophy as an early present? I doubt it.

I am a keen watcher of cycling Grand Tours. This summer I have seen the extreme heat across Europe from Italy to Spain via France. It is energy sapping and difficult to keep hydrated.

Now these cyclists are superb athletes they ride on average 175 Kilometres a day for 20 days. They have crashes, and when they hit the tarmac at 40 kilometres an hour, they look sometimes as though they have returned from the frontline in Ukraine. But they often just get back on their bike and ride for another 3 or 4 hours. No rolling around as though they have been the target of a sniper in the crowd.

So, long live the King, and let’s look forward to the completion of another successful season, albeit a stop start one.

And on that bombshell
