A series of personal thoughts from the side of the pitch.

By Aiden Mynott

Ok peeps are you getting excited about the World Cup? Yes, it’s here at the end of this month. How many of you are planning to watch games in Qatar? More to the point how many of you can afford to watch a live game in Qatar?

I am already seeing complaints of accommodation costs. There is some suggestion from the host nation you might like to stay on a cruise ship. I suppose the cost for that will vary from below decks to suites on the top deck of the boat. But I saw a report last week of camping costing in excess of £100 a night. I suspect this maybe more Glamping than the method used by the long-range desert group in World War 2.

Now most of you all will be aware that Qatar is a Muslim country and that means drinking alcohol in bars is not part of their culture. There has always been licensed premises available, and most hotels have areas where Europeans can get a glass of their favourite tipple. I am not sure how this is going to work for Budweiser, who are constantly telling us they are official sponsors of the World Cup.

Right, this is the bit where I think you need to sit down before reading any further. The average price of a pint of lager is £15. No, I haven’t made a mistake. Now think what you have paid today for your pint. Yes, I agree time to get another one before somebody decides to copy that while the World Cup is on.

I know that in the past because of sponsorship and supply deals the Club has had with the like of Greene King, it has always been able to be competitive on the pricing of drinks at the bar, while at the same time been able to maximise profits to help the running of the Club.

Me I’m sitting at home and watching. Supermarket priced booze and a comfortable seat. If the game is boring, I can switch off and crack open another tinnie. I can also have a bacon roll at half time with a pork pie. Again, something you will find difficult to find in Qatar.

Football fans everywhere, you have been carefully considered by FIFA in awarding this World Cup. Yes, everything that you as a natural fan of football consider to be important on your matchday experience, has either been overpriced or overlooked. Oh yes and drinking in public is strictly forbidden, as well as bringing alcohol into the country through duty free.

So, if you are going to watch a game live this world cup, lend us a couple of quid? You must either be a lottery winner, an executive of an Oil Gas or electric company or a Money Launderer.
