With past players from the 1960s looking on (see picture), the current Ware team enjoyed a victory over Southern League premier division opponents Hendon including former Ware player Lee Chappell in what was a well contested match.

In a first half during which both teams worked hard Ware took the lead when Louis Rose's header looped over the defence and into the net. But the highlight of the half was Andrew Bennett's goal, a shot from over 20 yards which found the top of the net.

The second half saw Louis Rose score again when he was on hand to slot the ball home from close range. Hendon reduced the arrears on 80 minutes but needed more accuracy in front of goal if they were to have made the score closer.

Rose was one of three centre backs, the others being Tom Boxer and Gareth Madden as Paul Halsey opted for five at the back completed by Harry Norman and Patrick Adamson. With Louis' brother Leigh Rose, Tom Bruno, Bennett and Imani Matthews in midfield there was just one striker. Liam Hope was unavailable so Tobi Adekunle was asked to play that role whilst Sam Butler did well in goal given that Calum Kitscha was also unavailable.

The second half saw Kardan Campbell, Ben Hart, Reece Crowter, Finley Long and Jason Brown come off the substitutes' bench.

Halsey has another chance to hone the five at the back approach on Tuesday when Cambridge City come to Wodson Park for the Blues' fifth pre-season friendly. Kick off is at 7:45pm.
