Both sides’ line-ups showed plenty of differences to those of their most recent league matches. For Ware this meant that five players made their first starts for some time or, in the case of Gucci Soulya-Osekanongo, a first start ever.
Fred Burbidge was one of those to keep his place as he comes within touching distance of his 100th appearance for Ware. Theo Ofori, himself having made it to 50 games on Saturday, celebrated with a goal in the first half. It came from a great run by Joe Dearman who seemed to be fouled but benefitted from an advantage played by referee Matthew Norton. Dearman's cross gave Ofori a simple tap in.
The goal was a quick response to Royston having taken the lead through Hamilton Rookard.
There were plenty of substitutions from both managers with Royston setting the trend with two at the start of the second half. Ware followed suit shortly after and it was one of those new entrants to the game, Tom Kay, who scored the winning goal. It was his first for the senior side.
The win was Ware’s 112th in the competition since their first 131 years and a day earlier. They will travel either to Cheshunt or Baldock Town in the quarter final. The final starts to come within range. Will this be the year that Ware win the competition to become only the second club to taste Herts Senior Cup success in three different centuries?
