Blues struggle to make the most of their chances. A few inches make a big difference.

This was a clear disappointment for Ware who enjoyed plenty of possession and seemingly more chances than their opponents, at least until the result had moved out of their control. But on the day Dunstable built on some first half pieces of fortune to score a comfortable win.

The opening four minutes were a microcosm of the game. From the kick off Ware had the better of things and looked to be moving the ball around confidently until it was given away in their own half. Joel Jacobs was on hand to chase the wayward pass but in turning to clear under pressure his feet went from under him and the ball fell to an opponent.

The resulting cross into Ware’s penalty area found Louie Collier who drilled the ball past Fred Burbidge for the opener. Dunstable had struck quickly when the opportunity of their first attack arrived and would remain a danger going forward for much of the game.

Ware struggled to regain their momentum, suddenly looking to have lost what has become their normal confident style. Too much of their play now seemed to rely on balls pumped down the middle, a tactic which was meat and drink to Ryan Frater, the experienced Dunstable centre back. He was to be a thorn in Ware’s side for much of the match, welcoming any high ball and delivering it back up the pitch on numerous occasions.

The pendulum did begin to swing back in Ware’s favour on seventeen minutes when Sam Chaney fed the ball to Richard Bryan. The right back carried it forward from deep and unleashed a powerful shot from distance that cannoned off Jamie Head’s cross bar. Had it been just a couple of inches lower we might have had a different game.

Four minutes later Ware had the ball in the net, Liam Dulson turning Marcus Milner’s cross home from close range before he was given offside. Once more it could only have been a matter of inches but Ware were denied again.

Even so they looked a lot more like themselves after these two near misses and enjoyed a good spell up to the end of the half. With the wind now at their backs it seemed that the second half would provide ample opportunities to get something out of the game and that’s the way it looked for the first fifteen minutes.

Both sides were competing well but Ware were pressing hard, forcing corners and having a confident shout for a penalty. Pulling an opponent’s shirt has long since become a part of the game and referee Mayer presumably judged this one to be not worthy of further concern.

That was it for Ware. Not long after, Dunstable scored again from a throw in that was helped on its way by Charlie Pattison’s overhead kick to just beyond Ware’s goal. There was Collier to head it back in a loop over Burbidge for his and his team’s second goal.

Substitutions were made, not least in sacrificing both fullbacks to bring on attacking players to try to recover the situation. In the surreal world of non-league football, it may have been of little surprise that one of those coming on was Tyriq Hunte to play his last game for Ware before an already agreed transfer to AFC Dunstable.

With Ware opting to put their energies into going forward it might have been expected that Dunstable were able to score a third. Pattison was released one on one with Burbidge and made no mistake with a confident shot. And it was definitely the ODs who were the confident ones now, looking for further goals up to the final whistle.

Ware: Fred Burbidge, Richard Bryan (Josh Williams 63mins), Joel Jacobs (Tyriq Hunte 80mins), Tom Bruno, Chris Arthur, Dan Rumens, Marcus Milner, Freddy Moncur, Renée Howe, Sam Chaney (Leigh Rose 57mins), Liam Dulson. Unused subs: Rechan Esprit, Louis Rose.
