If you think this season is one of set backs and recoveries there were times last season when it felt just the same. We travelled to Kidlington in February last season and I think we travelled with reasonable expectations. Our optimism was misplaced and we went down by 4-1.
In the season before that, on our only other visit to the Oxfordshire side, we came away with a 2-2 draw but our hopes had again been set higher. All in all the evidence suggests that it’s best to keep a lid on any anticipation particularly given the current injury problems.
I haven’t heard how Fred Burbidge is getting on which either suggests that he isn’t getting on very well or that we’re keeping our powder dry and not giving too much away. Kieran Bishop’s injury is also subject to the same hush hush conditions whilst Jack Dreyer will be out for a while yet. Hopefuly though, Freddy Moncur will have recovered from his illness and will be available for selection.
If so, he’ll face a team currently in 12th position in the table and with only one point from their last three games. That said their 3-2 reverse to AFC Dunstable in their latest home game was their first defeat at Yarnton Road since August. There’s obviously something about their ground but I still can’t work out what it is.
Who to look out for? Thirteen of their 22 league goals have come from three players – Felipe Barcelos with five and Connor Ferguson and Benjamin Richards with four each. Perhaps we should add those three to what it is that needs to be kept under a lid.
Meanwhile the weather has turned cold and that means there’s a risk of frost disrupting matches. Stay watchful and await news on social media about any possible postponement.
No risk of that on our 3G pitch where there will be two youth games on Sunday. The Under-18s face Hemel Hempstead at midday and the Under-14s welcome Dunstable Town at 2pm. It's free entry and the club room and tea bar will be open.
