Ware 1 Biggleswade 0

Stephen King27 Jan - 23:39

It’s a struggle against a new look Biggleswade but three points and a clean sheet are the result.

Ware’s hoped for resurgence following last week’s win over Leighton Town did continue with this game but there were a couple of dents in the shiny new model that Paul Halsey wheeled out onto the Wodson Park pitch.

Firstly, the rumours that Liam Dulson, the side’s top scorer, had been lured away to Bedford Town were proved to be correct by a quick glance at the team sheet. Then, thirty minutes into the game, new centre back Jack Grosvenor and a candidate for man of the match last week left the field with a tweaked hamstring.

By then Biggleswade had already established their approach to this game. With four at the back and Rio Bedingfield and Michael Simpson operating just in front of them, Ware faced a difficult task to unlock the visiting defence.

Not that Biggleswade were sitting back. They played a skilful game going forward when the chance arose and made a full contribution in an end to end first half. Surprisingly they also played a noticeably physical game. Whether by design or default it wasn't the style normally associated with Biggleswade.

Bedingfield was perhaps the extreme example and had picked up a yellow card on nineteen minutes when he needlessly pushed over a Ware player getting to his feet after a foul but he didn’t heed the warning. Twenty minutes later he committed what some saw as a petulant tackle, not unlike that which earned Kieran Bishop a red card at Kempston, and picked up a second yellow and an early shower. It seemed that at least one of those yellows might, on another day, have been a red so at least he retired from the game facing a lesser suspension than he might otherwise have had.

Nothing daunted, Biggleswade continued to play their game with the Marsh brothers, Lawrence and Alexander, the source of many of their moves. They might have taken the lead three minutes before the break when Daniel Bond fired in a good effort from a cross only to see Fred Burbidge pluck it calmly out of the air.

But it couldn’t last and with a man advantage Ware started to play the ball around, asking Biggleswade to chase it in an attempt to wear them down. It seemed to work with Joe Dearman having a good game on the wing, outpacing the visiting defence, and Alex Warman controlling in the midfield.

Both Dearman and Ramiah Mills were bringing the ball forward with regularity but cross after cross somehow either eluded a Ware man or took an unexpected deviation off a defender. And, as Ware had the better of the game without being able to make it count the visitors looked capable of stealing the points with a break away.

Finally the pressure told. Dearman did well to get in a cross from the left to Jon Clements. The number nine had earlier demonstrated good control whilst on the ground to win and distribute the ball. He did it again this time, with his way blocked and pressure forcing him backwards and off his feet he still managed to lay the ball back to Freddy Moncur.

Moncur was having a good game and put a final gloss on his performance by finding the time and space to set himself for a match winning shot relying on accuracy more than power beyond Tyler Josephs.

Clements later hit the inside of a post with the ball rebounding across the face of goal before the assistant’s flag was raised for offside. Ware could have done with another goal as Biggleswade raised their game searching for an equaliser. This culminated in a scramble in front of the Ware goal three minutes into added time but the ball was somehow cleared.

Ware have now moved level on points with Cirencester and Waltham Abbey but just outside the play-offs. As a sign that the season is hotting up those two sides are the next visitors to Wodson Park although a trip to Barton Rovers is next on the cards.

Ware: Fred Burbidge, Stef Georgiou, David Sota, Freddy Moncur, Darion Furlong, Jack Grosvenor (Ekow Coker 29mins), Joe Dearman, Alex Warman, Jon Clements, Jack Dreyer, Ramiah Mills. Unused subs: Gabriel Chapps, George Ironton, Michael Toner, Matt Walsh.
