Disappointing game still delivers three points.

This was a poor advert for Step 4 football with the description “disjointed” best fitting the quality of play. It took moments of individual effort and skill to turn the game in Ware’s favour against a side battling to escape the relegation positions.

And battling is the word as Thame carried the game to their opponents from the off. They looked more determined than Ware, the threat of relegation it seems being more of an incentive than the hope of promotion. Every flick on, every loose ball seemed to find a Thame player as a result.

A steady rock at the centre of all this for the home side was captain Jefferson Louis. He has done the rounds at various League and non-League sides and will be remembered by Ware fans as the man who scored twice late on in the 2022 play-off final with North Leigh to quash Ware’s hopes of promotion.

Now he is putting his experience and height to use for Thame in a more central role and was their best player on the day, calm when others around him seemed less sure.

It wasn’t enough however and despite all Thame’s possession and effort which included “scoring” an offside goal, Ware took the lead as the half hour approached. A through ball cleared the defence and fell into the run of Keiran Bishop. It’s hard to say for sure but by the time Bishop came into the picture he looked offside but there again, he could well have been onside when the ball was kicked.

Play went on and Bishop took the ball through but wide before laying it back to Joe Dearman. For a moment it looked as though the number eleven had delayed too long but he steadied himself and shot home for the opening goal from six yards.

For what seems to have been the first time in a long while the breaks had gone Ware’s way. That was no consolation to relegation haunted Thame and their manager vented his frustration that so much good work by his team had been negated.

It got worse for him five minutes later. A cross field ball found Theo Ofori on the right and he was quick to spot an opening, threading the ball through a gap in the home defence for Jack Dreyer. Dreyer carried it forward before slipping it calmly past the advancing Archie Davis and into the net.

Things didn’t get any better for the home side after the break and a double substitution after ten minutes spoke of Thame’s desire to refresh their approach. Yet it was Ware who struck again, Alex Warman’s ball from left to right found Ofori and he took it forward. Cutting across the edge of the penalty area he took the opportunity to shoot into the top right corner of Davis’s goal with the keeper’s dive just not able to do anything about it.

It was the goal Ware needed. With a three-goal advantage and another game on Monday, Paul Halsey started to play his replacements to reduce tiredness and the chance of injury. Ofori was one of those taken off which seemed a bit tough after scoring such a good goal but it was now the next match which mattered.

Thame took the opportunity of a revamped Ware side to score with twenty minutes left. Harry Alexander’s goal was as much out of the blue as Ware’s first had been but a decent reward for the home teams’ efforts. Like Ware’s goal in the first half, it rejuvenated the scoring side and Thame came into the picture again but it was too little, too late.

Ware: Fred Burbidge, Stef Georgiou (Ben Siggers 68mins), David Sota, Mitch Hahn (Freddy Moncur 62mins), Ekow Coker, Jack Grosvenor, Theo Offori (Richard Ennin 62mins), Alex Warman, Kieran Bishop, Jack Freyer, Joe Dearman. Unused subs: Kai Somers, Gabriel Chapps.
