Rovers eased themselves ahead at the end of an even first half, a period of pressure five minutes before the end of normal time bringing its reward. Matthew Moloney escaped the attention of the Ware defence to give Jamie Head in the Ware goal no chance as he had time and space to find the net.
Head, on loan from St Albans City, had made two good saves just minutes before, clawing the ball away at the foot of his post before tipping a header over the bar soon after.
Before all that it had been an end to end game with Ware’s Tim Okwusogu getting the ball in the net after ten minutes only to be ruled offside. At the other end Taylor Rhiney might have done better when set free on goal but he shot wide with only Head to beat.
In response Joe Dearman outpaced Alfie Warman to send a pinpoint cross into the Barton area but the waiting Okwusogu was denied by a timely intervention from Cameron Hyde, the ball being cleared seemingly from off his foot.
This summed up much of the game with Ware’s front runners looking skilful and pacey but unable to apply a finishing touch.
Ware looked slow to recover from going behind and eight minutes into the second half they were two down, Charlie Milton’s header from a throw-in looping over the home defenders and then Head to nestle in the goal.
That should have been it and for a while Ware looked as though they thought so too. They had their moments but still failed to penetrate the Rovers’ defence with any force. One chance stood out when Johnny Allotey’s cross was met first time by Mitch Hahn but his goal-bound shot struck a defender and was cleared.
The turning point came with just twenty minutes left. A free kick to Ware some twenty yards out and just wide of the D saw Hahn and Ben Siggers considering their options. Those who had seen Siggers score from a similarly placed free kick in the Charity Cup match at Cheshunt sensed an opportunity.
And it was the young full back who stepped up to take the kick. Unlike the goal at Cheshunt, high and to the keeper’s right, this time Siggers curled the ball to Tyler Josephs’ left. The result was the same however and Ware had pulled a goal back.
Suddenly there was hope and Ware applied themselves to the task of rescuing a point. Eight minutes later it looked as though they had got one. Chukuma Okotcha laid the ball towards Stef Georgiou who, in a manner that is becoming familiar, drove forward with the ball. As the Rovers defence parted obligingly Georgiou saw his opportunity. A left foot shot from outside the area found the back of the net with Josephs beaten to his left.
There was still the chance of a Barton response but instead it was Ware who struck again. This time Hahn played the captain’s role as a loose ball bounced towards him well outside the area. Seeing Josephs off his line Hahn’s volley was judged to perfection, looping over the keeper to hit the back of the net and seal the win.
Ware had come back from the dead with a result that is a morale booster for Monday’s league game at Hertford. That said all three goals came thanks to individual initiative and skill. Ware can’t expect this in every game and will need to make better use of the openings they create going forward as a team if they are to continue to pick up points.
