Ware 3 Petersfield Town 1

Stephen King13 Feb 2016 - 19:57

Ware end their drought with spirited performance and first league double of the season.

It felt like a long time coming but after the disappointment of points thrown away in the last minutes against Leighton in midweek, Ware turned on their attacking style in an entertaining match and deservedly took the points.

Their lively and aggressive start set the tone for the match as they fought for possession and made numerous chances. This was the Ware that supporters have been missing of late with the win giving them their first three-goal haul in the nine games since December 19th and a first league double following the 3-2 away win in October.

The first half was goalless but Ware should have been ahead at the break as they tore into the visiting defence. Man of the match Khale DaCosta was the inspiration with Dernell Wynter and Jimmy Hartley ably following his lead as they glided through a Petersfield defence on a slippery surface.

Not that the visitors were overrun and if Ware had the better of things it was only marginally so as Petersfield always looked dangerous when they went forward. Even so it was Ware who ended the half the stronger as Wynter flashed a shot just over the bar.

The second half followed a similar close fought pattern with Ware still looking for a seemingly elusive opening whilst wary of the visitors' response. But it took just nine minutes for the home side to open the scoring, Kieran Bishop being on the end of a through ball and able to slot it past Luke Eaton as he advanced from his goal.

This was a game where one goal would not be enough and both sides continued to probe for the next score. Tom Coulton played his part with one spectacular reactive save to keep his side ahead. In the event the next goal fell to Ware as the hard working DaCosta put a wicked centre across the face of the Petersfield goal which eluded all but Wynter at the far post who volleyed home from a few feet.

DaCosta was still running the show and might have had a goal when his lofted shot grazed the top of the cross bar but he was not to be denied. Minutes later he outpaced a defender, turned into the area and drilled home a left foot shot for 3-0.

With Ware's work seemingly done, Wynter and DaCosta were taken off but in this season of late comebacks supporters hearts were in their mouths when Joseph Briggs pulled one back for the visitors with nine minutes to go. It spoiled Ware's hopes of a clean sheet but one could hardly begrudge the visitors their reward from a competitive game.

There were some close calls in the home defence after that but Ware were not to be denied for once. At the final whistle there was much relief all round as Ware recorded their first win since 5th December with Bishop, as always, ready to share the joy with the fans behind the goal.

Afterwards Ken Charlery confirmed that things are starting to come together though there are still some edges to be smoothed off and a couple of positions to be strengthened. Whilst he will be looking for new blood there is no doubt that fielding a more settled side (the starting line-up was the same for this game as in the previous one) is beginning to pay off.

Ware: Tom Coulton, Jack Mace, Alaa Oujdi, Ryan Hervel, Marcus Rose, Ben Crilley, Khale DaCosta (Rod Young 87mins), Jimmy Hartley, Kieran Bishop, Dernell Wynter (Onur Bakici 76mins), Murat Karagul. Unused subs: Elliot Bailey, Karl Stevenson.
