London Colney 2 Ware 3

Stephen King1 Nov 2017 - 22:26

Ware come from behind for morale boosting win.

A month that began with a home league win over Cheshunt to lift Ware back into play-off contention but then tailed off alarmingly has ended with an exciting cup win.

The win was Ware's first in four Senior Cup meetings with London Colney suggesting that they have in the past underestimated their Step 5 opposition, perhaps by fielding weakened teams. With the need put a stop to what has become a very bad run there was much conjecture on just what sort of "eleven" Ware would put out.

In the event it was a reasonably strong side showing four personnel changes in the starting line up from that which started at Dorking. Two of those changes were at full back with Josh Dobson and Dean Mason disappearing and being replaced by moving Gareth Madden and Alaa Oujdi from their more normal positions.

Junior Appiah was also absent with Marcus Milner making a return from injury but perhaps the most significant change was the promotion of academy keeper Sam Butler with Tom Coulton being rested.

London Colney meanwhile fielded a number of ex-Blues with Jack Mace (59 appearances and 1 goal) and Joe Reynolds (48 and 5) starting, with Laurance Vaughan (8 and 2) and former youth player Finley Long on the bench. As a result there was plenty to generate a tough game for Ware and that's how it proved in the first half.

Wilson Ferreira was causing most trouble for the visiting defence heading and then shooting wide before he was brought down by Ahmed Mohammed in the area. He got up, dusted himself off and placed the kick wide of Butler for the lead.

Ferreira had another chance later in the half but as this wore on it was Ware doing most of the attacking with Elliott Charles, Mohammed and Milner all creating opportunities.

The second half continued in this vein until Ferreira appeared to have sealed the tie in London Colney's favour when he scored from just inside the Ware half, lobbing Butler with a fierce shot.

It looked all up for Ware but two goals in the same number of minutes changed the game around. First Dean Mason, off the bench at half time, did well to win the ball and his cross was headed home by Yannick Kamanan. Soon after the restart Madden put in his own cross and in the resulting melee there was a neat irony that it was Mohammed who was upended allowing Kamanan to double his and Ware's total from the spot.

There were chances at either end after this but with time running out and penalties beckoning a corner was met by Charles at the near post and headed home for the winner.

Ware: Sam Butler, Gareth Madden, Alaa Oujdi, Ahmed Abdulla, Murat Karagul, Lee White, Symeon Taylor (Dean Mason 45mins), Ahmed Mohammed (Denzel Conteh 90mins), Elliott Charles, Yannick Kamanan, Marcus Milner. Unused subs: Gus Douglas, Warren Kayembe, Necati Gench.
