Disappointing performance sees Ware out of the FA Cup. Blues struggle to put their game together.

Paul Halsey’s view after the game was that things were just not right in most aspects of his team’s performance. They certainly worked hard to stay in the match but passes went astray and Ware’s game broke down too often and too early.

The worry before kick off was the absence of both central defenders, Dave Kendall having joined Dan Rumens with his own hamstring problem. In the event the pairing of Gareth Madden and Louis Rose in the back four worked perfectly well although the home side’s opening goal midway through the first half did feature both men.

A Canvey attack seemed to have been dealt with by Rose and Madden but a clearance by one hit the other before rebounding off the first. It was so quick that who actually did what wasn’t obvious and later no-one was willing to ask disappointed players whose name should go on the own goal. All that can be said is that at the end it was Rose chasing the bobbling ball in a doomed effort to scoop it off the line.

It was an unfortunate goal to concede but whilst neither team looked particularly impressive the Gulls held the balance, their quick breaks always looking dangerous whilst Ware were rarely able to get close to Bobby Mason’s goal. In one such break Canvey might have taken the lead earlier than they did but Harrison Chatting scuffed his shot wide when presented with an open goal.

A sign of the frustration in Ware’s play came as early as the eighth minute when Jordan Westcott was booked for a tackle. He didn’t take the hint and whilst he escaped further punishment for a second heavy tackle it seemed prudent to take him off at half time to be replaced by Tom Bruno.

Ware did look better for Bruno’s presence in the opening 15 minutes of the second half when it was they who had more of the play. Their best chance came in this period as Pat Adamson (Ware’s man of the match) worked his way across field just outside the penalty area before driving the ball low towards goal. Somehow Mason got down to the foot of his right-hand post to turn the ball away for a corner.

A goal then might have led to a resurgence from the Blues, instead the game returned to the routine established in the first half. Canvey were breaking quickly and dangerously whilst Ware’s attacks were easily broken by the home defence. In the end the outcome was settled when Ware lost the ball again and it was quickly returned to their penalty area. For once there was space for Tobi Joseph to exploit and he turned to drive the ball into the back of the net from close range.

The remaining twenty minutes held the hope that a Ware goal might still spark an improvement but it just wasn’t their day leaving manager Halsey with the problem of how to revive things before league competition starts at Staines next week.

Ware: Calum Kitscha, George Casey, Pat Adamson, Leigh Rose, Louis Rose, Gareth Madden, Marcus Milner, Jordan Westcott (Tom Bruno 46mins), Liam Hope (Jordon Watson 66mins), Andre McCollin (Albert Adu 66mins), Williams Danquah. Unused subs: Finlay Titchmarsh, Harry Watkins, Danny Wickenden, Devonte Simms.
