Saturday 26th March – This week brought our last away game of the season. We were away to Woodmansterne who we had beaten earlier in the season but there recent run of form was pointing to some improvement. This fixture had already been called off twice for a waterlogged pitch so we were a bit shocked not to get a call on Saturday morning when there was a little dew on the grass. Any way…..it was a cracking day for football and we were raring to go.
Woodmansterne were a very young side with a few old heads to keep them going in the right direction. They started brightly and were competing well, however we remained calm and played as much football on the floor as we could. The first ten minutes were really tit for tat with neither side dominating. We conceded a corner on the left and rather surprisingly Frodo’s smaller brother rose unchallenged and planted the ball in the back of our net giving Keith no chance. 1-0 and we were all a bit dumbstruck. Straight from the kick off we launched a direct attack, Ash supplied a great ball into the middle and Richard Wadsworth blasted a low thunderbolt past the stricken keeper to bring us back to 1-1. Our tails were up now and Kev Badcock immediately found himself right through with only the keeper to beat but unfortunately it went just wide. The rest of the first half descended into a boot it in the air and hope for the best scenario but if anyone was going to score it was us. However we didn’t and we went in at half time with 1 goal a piece!!
The second half started pretty much as the first half finished, ball in the air and very difficult to control on the ground. We were dominating more now but we weren’t creating any great opportunities in front of goal, the Woodmansterne keeper had a lot of experience but was never going to stop a low shot, unfortunately we never got to find that out!! Woodmansterne managed 1 attack mid way through the half and the shouting woke Keith up in time for him to run out and pluck the ball from the Woodmansterne strikers feet. With 15 to go Kev twisted his ankle and went down screaming like an enraged bull on heat which terrified the poor young Woodmansterne players, he couldn’t carry on so we switched him for Alex Rolfe. Alex went into the midfield where we knew he would make some damaging runs and possibly nick a winner for us. Oh no sorry I was getting Alex mixed up with Simon Lineker!! I knew we would have another opportunity at some stage and I was right, the ball swung across from the left straight into the path of Alex but a nasty bobble was enough to take it away from him. So the game ended 1-1 without a serious Woodmansterne attack in the second half, a game we should definitely have won.
South Park at home next week who have miraculously turned their season around recently!!
Man of the match. Ash Bamford, works bloody hard every week. Its not all about scoring goals. Also top man to Jack Griffiths, came along as sub, didn’t get on and didn’t moan at all.
