Warlingham "A" put 3 past Reigate Sala to seal 4th place

Saturday 9th April – and so we came to the last game of the season!! We were at home to Reigate Sala who were having an excellent finish to their season; a win for them today would see them go above us in the league. It was an absolutely glorious day as we walked down to the bottom pitch where a scene from the land of the giants awaited. Sala were huge and very keen, running up and down, stretching and having a very intense team talk. They obviously intended doing everything humanly possible to beat us today.

We were also very keen and wanted to finish the season well, hopefully with a win. The first 10 minutes saw us fairly well under the kosh from Sala, they were trying to use their height as much as possible with non stop corners and long throws pummelling our defence. However we stood firm and the defence were magnificent, after the initial onslaught we started chasing absolutely everything and Sala became quite unsettled. We were growing in confidence and were playing some absolutely tremendous football. After 25 minutes we won a penalty and the legendary Ash Bamford stepped up to take it. He confidently strode up and hit the ball cleanly past the Sala keeper who watched bounce innocently off of his cross bar!!! We deserved to be 1 0 up but the woodwork had denied us, however we continued to press and our short sharp football was wearing Sala down. They had some very big boys at the back and our pace was causing them more and more problems. On the 34th minute Ryan chased down a ball with the Sala keeper and got a great block which went straight up in the air, Ryan continued forward to meet it with his head and just get it into the back of the net to make it 1 0. Sala continued to be a danger from set pieces but we defended admirably and went in ahead at the whistle.

We were keen to get out for the second half and continue where we left off. We started strongly again and were playing some brilliant football, short sharp and direct. After 5 minutes Pete got through against the keeper and touched a gorgeous little shot past the keeper who had no chance. 2 0 and fully deserved, truly some of the best football I have seen us play. Sala were becoming frustrated now as they could not handle the football and commitment from us, we were working really hard in the middle of the park with Dave and Jack having great games. Dave was all over the park and absolutely pulverised one of the Sala defenders who through a bit of a hissy fit and got him booked. Nancy!! Dave continued to give 110% and I thought it wise to take him off before he saw the little red number the ref was twitching to give. Ten minutes from time Pete struck again, Foxy was through and had a great effort which the keeper managed to keep out but Pete was there to finish it off. So we finished the afternoon with a brilliant 3 0 win and possibly the best performance of the season.

Man of the match. Every single player. Honestly was a brilliant performance by every player. Its been a cracking season and in reality we could have won it or maybe got 2nd place. Thanks very much to all of the players and here’s to another one next year.

Dinner & Dance – Let’s have a good turn out from the 3’s on the 7th May to celebrate!!!!
