Warlingham snatch a late winner to progress in the Intermediate Cup

Saturday 7th Nov – We were a bit battered and bruised this week after our performance against Reigate Hill. We were due to face Overton in the Intermediate Cup and it started badly as the management turned up late!! Shocker. Overton were quite a young side and so we knew it would be a tough game.

We started well playing the easy ball and having the better of the game. We were still much too quiet and our final ball was letting us down. We pressed for the majority of the half creating a number of good chances only to be kept out by the Overton keeper. With 10 minutes to go Dave Hockham made a great save to keep Overton out and we went in at half time 0-0. We had had the best of the first half but again had not been able to put the ball in the back of the net.

In the 2nd half we changed it around a bit as we just weren’t having the run of the ball. I put Simon Mayhew at left back to give us a more experienced head at the back and then put on 2 new young lads at the back and up front. Nobody was playing badly, I took off Foxy and Pip and that probably wasn’t my greatest decision, but hey I’m only human and don’t always get it right. Some would say I rarely get it right !!! We continued to press and Dave Baker had a couple of excellent shots which brought great saves from the Overton keeper. We were having a definite case of déjà vu and I could see another late winner against the run of play. With 1 minute to go Jon ‘I scored 8 at Woodhatch’ Rolfe said it looked like we would be going into extra time, I confidently predicted that we would win in normal time and incredibly with virtually our last attack we headed goalwards and got a nice little deflection which beat the Overton keeper at last. That’s how it finished and I think we deserved the win. Hats off to Overton though they had given us a really good game.

It had been a really good performance and all of the lads played well. Special mention for Ollie Rolfe who played really well and delivered some brilliant corners.

Man of the match. Rees Newton – Played really well in midfield, producing some brilliant runs and delivering some great crosses.
