Warlingham "B" blast past Brockham - can they keep this going and lift the league title?

Saturday 27th March – We were kicking off late today away to Brockham Reserves. I went into the game rather concerned as our last encounter had been an absolute disaster, we pummelled them for 85 minutes and then lost 1-0 in the most depressing game this season. We desperately needed to win and win well. It was a bit of a grey dreary day and the pitch was quite heavy and cut up but nowhere near as bad as expected.

We had changed the set up of the team around a bit as things haven’t clicked too well over the last couple of weeks. Jack ‘Rudolph’ Griffiths was sitting in front of the midfield with Dave Baker out and out forward and Crunch and Joe looking to give us some width. Brockham had a couple of their first team to give them a bit of a boost and started quite well, we were confident though and were playing some lovely football, Cocksedge and Foxy were working hard and controlling the middle of the park well. 15 minutes gone and I was starting to get a bit of déjà vu, we were dominating but not getting the breakthrough and they had a couple of players that were capable of scoring. On 17 minutes Baker dribbled it through the Brockham defence and hit a classy shot past their keeper, who had been doing well so far. At last the breakthrough!! Hopefully there were more to follow. It was all one way traffic now and Joe Shadenburg was absolutely on fire, everything he did worked and his delivery was top class. 6 minutes later Cruncher took it past the exposed Brockham keeper to help himself to the open net and put us 2-0 up. The rain started to come down and playing good football was becoming harder, that didn’t stop us though. Our work rate was absolutely outstanding and the whole team were really up for this game. With 5 minutes to go to half time Dave B broke through again and slid the ball easily into the back of the net to make it 3-0 which gave us a nice cushion.

We wanted more of the same for the second half, we were talking more and playing great football. I wanted to give Dan Tyrell a run so I started him in place of Ollie who had been brilliant in the first half. Brockham came out of the blocks really quickly at the start of the second half and we found ourselves defending some good attacks. As normal our defence stood up to the test superbly well with Dave Hockham pulling off a great save to keep them out, after that we gradually settled down and started playing again. We were using the width well with Joe and Crunch and Dave B was tearing them to pieces in the middle, it was only a matter of time. I wasn’t disappointed, Dave B let rip with an absolute blaster which gave their keeper no chance, 4-0. Straight from kick off we won the ball and put it through to Dave B and bang, number 5. All those weeks of Jonny Rolfe going to church, praying and singing in the choir were finally paying off; the good lord was shining on us. 4 minutes later Joe broke through down the right and let fly with a screamer which exploded back off the post but went straight back into Joe’s path just right for him to bury it in the back of their net, 6-0. Joe had had a great afternoon on the right and it finished beautifully, he took the ball past their left back and hit it with power across the face of the goal going in off one of the Brockham defenders. 7-0 and yes we have given that to Joe, he deserved it. There were only seconds to go when Brockham launched a final attack, there central defender had found himself just outside our penalty area and let fly with a good shot which just eluded Dave H. The final whistle went immediately after that and we had thoroughly deserved a great 7-1 win, brilliant performance all round.

A good 3 points in the bag with plenty of goals, Reigate Hill only drew and have played all of their games while Alliance lost 5-0 and now only have us to play. We can win this league and its entirely in our own hands. We still need Jon to put in a word on Sunday morning to his mate in the white dress!!

Man of the match. Dave Baker was brilliant and Jack Griffiths kept us all warm with his ‘radiator legs’ but I have to give it to Joe. Best game I’ve seen him play.
